Over 13,000 ASTM standards operate globally. Defined and set by us, they improve the lives of millions every day. Combined with our innovative business services, they enhance performance and help everyone have confidence in the things they buy and use – from the toy in a child’s hand to the aircraft overhead. Working across borders, disciplines, and industries we harness the expertise of over 30,000 members to create consensus and improve performance in manufacturing and materials, products and processes, systems and services. Understanding commercial needs and consumer priorities, we touch every part of everyday life: helping our world work better. For almost 125 years, ASTM has been well known as one of the world’s largest and most established standards creating organizations. Today, ASTM also offers a wide range of products and services that go well beyond standards: training, proficiency testing, certification and the new portal service Compass. These offerings significantly enhance the benefits ASTM provides to its stakeholders worldwide.

Last week in Toronto, the hazardous substances and oil spill response committee (F20) issued two awards of appreciation during their April Committee Week meetings. Vince Mitchell (in blue in photo below) and Steve Potter received awards for new standards they developed that got approved last year. Both we presented with the award by F20 Chair Marc Blanchard. Mitchell was recognized for his contributions resulting in the publication of F3694-24 Standard Guide for Towing and Anchoring Oil Booms. Potter was honored for his work on the publication of F3724-24 Standard Guide for Testing Advancing Skimming Systems. Congratulations! #ASTMproud

ASTM’s medical and surgical materials and devices committee (F04) will aid procedures for multiplying tissue cell cultivation in laboratory situations. Both normal and diseased tissue cells are cultured in laboratories for research, drug discoveries, toxicological tests, and producing products for cell therapies and cultured food. “These industries need a reliable test method for assessing and comparing the quality of cell expansion processes. This new standard provides an important basis for the kinds of quality certifications and regulations that ensure the development of more effective medicines and cell-based therapies for patients,” says ASTM member James L. Sherley, M.D., Ph.D., president and CEO of Asymmetrex®, LLC. For more info, visit https://lnkd.in/ezxRj_J6 #medical #medicine #tissue #celltherapy #toxicology

ASTM's forensic sciences committee (E30) is developing a proposed standard that will aid in the use of chemical analysis in forensics studies. “The proposed standard will be applicable to laboratories performing chemical testing,” says ASTM member Laura Hernandez, director, Verity Labs, Inc. “It will set consistent requirements from lab to lab on the minimum requirements to validate or verify methods.” See https://lnkd.in/ephn6Bih #forensicsciences #forensics #chemicals #lab #labs

ASTM's additive manufacturing technologies committee (F42) is developing a proposed standard that will cover environment, health, and safety principles for the use of polymers with material extrusion (MEX). In MEX technology, material is extruded through a nozzle to build three-dimensional objects one layer at a time. “The proposed standard will provide guidelines regarding the safe installation and operation of MEX equipment in an industrial environment,” says ASTM member François Richard, manufacturing engineering manager, Pratt & Whitney Canada. Earlier this week, during the ASTM aviation fuels standards meetings in Brussels, ASTM staff and officers had the pleasure of meeting with Transport & Environment (T&E) to discuss their impactful advocacy on sustainability in aviation. The conversation focused on reducing non-CO₂ emissions and exploring synergies between standardization efforts on aviation safety and environmental goals. From left to right in photo: Krisztina Hencz (Toth), aviation policy manager at T&E; Louis Fredricks, ASTM International European policy adviser; Sara Gobbi, ASTM International director of European Affairs; Teresa Alleman, HF Sinclair; and ASTM International pretroleum, liquid fuels, and lubricants committee (D02) Vice Chair Alexander Kunkel, T&E clean fuels data analyst. #SustainableAviation #sustainability #aviation #ASTM #TransportAndEnvironment #AviationFuels #fuel #fuels

Celebrating its 10th anniversary year, ASTM's Emerging Professionals (EP) program seeks to create opportunities that facilitate participation for new members who have demonstrated the potential to be industry and committee leaders. "[The Emerging Professional Program] helped me to understand the framework and rich history of ASTM," says Dr. Apurba Banerjee — an EP graduate and material and textile scientist. "I really didn't understand how to do ballotting, how to do task groups... and so this training really helped me understand and be comfortable," adding that "now I'm...running meetings!" ASTM's paint and related coatings, materials, and applications committee (D01) has approved a new standard that will be useful for characterizing the wettability of surfaces. The new standard describes how to make such measurements by contact angle measurement using portable goniometers. ASTM member Giles Dillingham notes that the recent development of portable handheld and robotically employed contact angle measurement instrumentation is allowing these measurements to be made directly on complex manufactured items during production. Examples include automobile bodies and components, aircraft, sports equipment, consumer electronic devices, and medical tools. https://lnkd.in/eqCmNxUK #paint #coating #wettability #automobiles #aircraft #sports #consumerproducts #medicine
