The Competition that Produced one of the Fastest Electric Boats Ever: PEP (Promoting Electric Propulsion) In a small protected bay in eastern Virginia this week a flotilla of electric boats will be racing around inflatable cones against the clock to see which boat is fastest. Built by teams from over 30 universities for the annual PEP competition, these boats were developed using competition guidelines and researching the latest in hull design, propulsion systems, and autonomous and remote control systems. While some boats have a human pilot, many of these boats will be uncrewed, and instead piloted from a chase boat using a remote system. If you are picturing small R/C boats however, you’d be mistaken. This competition has produce some serious engineering power, and during the 2024 competition Princeton Electric Speedboating's entry “Big Bird” reached speeds over 65mph. The prior year, the same boat flat out topped the world’s electric boat speed record at 117mph, making it the fastest electric hydroplaning vessel in existence. The PEP competition is put on by the American Society of Naval Engineers headed up by Michael Briscoe, Ph.D. and a number of other volunteers, and backed by the Office of Naval Research in order to help create the future work force needed for electric boats. At Electrified Marina, we had the chance to race an X Shore 1 against a Scout 215 Dorado powered by a Flux Marine outboard system. It was an absolute blast filming this, and the hope is that it gives a sense of the kind of fun day you can have on a fully electric powered boat. https://lnkd.in/e2JSJ8Wf

Speakers at the Nautical Ventures Electrification Pavilion at the Miami Boat Show shared some insights into the electric boat market over the past few years. Some Key Takeaways: Range is not a problem. Telematics from Freedom Boat Club show that the average distance of a recreational boat trip is 8 to 12 miles. -Roger Moore, CEO Nautical Ventures Many electric boat buyers are actually first time boaters attracted by low operating costs, environmental concerns, and convenience of never having to visit a fuel dock. -Cri Boratenski, X Shore Electric boats are a viable option now, and range has not been an issue. Customers are asking if reducing their battery packs is possible as they often return from trips with 30% battery remaining. -Benjamin Sorkin CEO, Flux Marine Vision Marine is expanding overseas to the European market having secured distribution agreements. Vision is also set to break their own speed record with their new race boat. -Maxime Poudrier , Vision Marine Technologies As technology progresses electrification is becoming a viable option for recreational boaters in many use cases, however the biggest challenge is getting the word out that these boats are clean, safe, inexpensive to operate, and most importantly, fun!

Electrified Marina is one of the only exclusive electric boat dealers in North America, and last week I had the privilege of spending time with their team. Had some great electric boat conversations with Erick Pinzon, and took advantage of so many electric boats being in one place! Upcoming videos on the all electric Scout Motors Inc. 215 Dorado powered by a Flux Marine outboard, a boat vs boat test between the Flux Dorado, and the Xshore 1, and out now on the YouTube channel: a feature on the Electrified Marina team ☀️ ## I will be in Miami this week for the boat show - if you are in town and want to connect and have a conversation about electric boats, reach out!

The California VW Mitigation Trust is extending its application deadline of January 22, 2025 until further notice for its Zero Emissions Freight and Marine Program, or ZEFM. This program originally set aside $70 million for zero emissions freight vehicles and vessel electric re-powers, and has awarded $45 million to recipients already. The majority of these funds have gone to electric forklifts and tractors, with only $2.5 million going towards re-powering two ferries and a tug boat, and $13 million to install shore power stations. There remains an additional $25 million in this grant presenting opportunities for California businesses to re-power their vessels to electric and receive up to 100% funding. For more information, please see: https://lnkd.in/gMPww_x This program is administered by the California Air Resources Board
