Our CEO and cofounder Jeff Beck, LCSW shares his insights in MedCity News on how private equity and corporate interests are reshaping autism care, and what must be done to ensure families have access to high-quality services.
Thank you to MedCity News for inviting me to share our thoughts on how private equity’s increasing involvement in autism services has reduced access to quality care for kids and families. PE has driven 85% of this sector's mergers and acquisitions from 2017 to 2022 – a shift that often prioritizes profit over patients. It leaves families with inadequate support from minimally-trained technicians and an overwhelming demand for dozens of therapy hours. To fix this, regulators, payors, and innovators must collaborate to streamline licensing, expand value-based care contracts, and integrate telehealth services—ensuring high-quality therapy is accessible to all, regardless of location or financial resources.

Important story from Laura Lovett at Behavioral Health Business. Medicaid is a last line of defense for millions of people that need mental and behavioral health support. As she noted in her piece - Medicaid is the #1 payer for children and pediatric patients, and an outsized portion of those with autism rely on Medicaid. We’ve seen that firsthand here at AnswersNow, where more than 70% of our families are covered by Medicaid - many of whom already had to suffer through months-long waitlists and delayed critical care before finding our virtual services. With Medicaid already instituting caps on ABA support in some states, any fresh cuts would put them at severe risk. As an industry, we need to take a stronger stance with our representatives and regulators. How can we justify cuts that deprive children of the chance to learn how to communicate, interact with their peers, or build essential life skills that empower them to navigate the world around them? We’ve watched as our ABA therapy has helped children learn their first words, how to brush their teeth, and how to sit through an entire school day. One parent even shared that, thanks to their child's progress, their family was able to leave the house together for the first time in over three years. Medicaid is the lifeline that makes this possible and must be preserved. Our leaders in Washington would do well to remember that these are real people with real challenges - not faceless numbers on a spreadsheet. https://lnkd.in/dfpw3ZJa

Every child is unique, but some challenges like difficulty communicating or managing big emotions could mean they need extra support. ABA therapy takes an individualized approach to building essential skills while lessening problematic behaviors. At AnswersNow, Parent Training isn’t just an add-on—it’s a core part of our care model. Because our ABA therapy is fully remote, we require more hands-on involvement from both our BCBAs and our parents, especially for early learners. This hands-on approach not only accelerates learning but also empowers parents or caregivers with the confidence and skills to support their child’s progress every day.
