A new report has revealed the significant benefits of seabed mapping within the UK Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The report estimates that seabed mapping in the UK EEZ delivers around £8.9 billion in benefits. The annual investment is around £103 million. This results in a cost benefit ratio of £86 in benefits for every £1 spent on seabed mapping. Commissioned by the UKHO and developed by Eunomia Research & Consulting - Certified B Corp., the report highlights the value of seabed mapping data and aims to improve its quality, access and coverage. With technological advancements and initiatives like the UK Centre for Seabed Mapping, the UK is improving its understanding of the seafloor, ensuring safer, more sustainable maritime operations. Throughout the 2024/25 survey season, XOCEAN collected over 3,000km² of high-quality maritime geospatial data in the Southwest Approaches. The data collected will be crucial in producing our ADMIRALTY products and services, supporting the safety of life at sea. Read more about the project below.
XOCEAN’s deployment of five USVs off the Isles of Scilly marked a significant achievement in civil hydrographic surveying for the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO). The USVs, operated by pilots and surveyors from onshore locations, conducted extensive bathymetric surveys of the seabed, enhancing the understanding of underwater features ranging from depth variations and habitats to ridges, boulders and shipwrecks. This high-quality data will be crucial in the production of accurate nautical charts, significantly enhancing maritime navigation safety. Additionally, the data will support extensive marine environmental assessments and advanced sustainable practices within the blue economy.
