CELEBRATING BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH DAY! On April 12th, we honour the legendary poet, playwright, activist and Newham-resident Benjamin Zephaniah, whose work has inspired generations with its powerful messages of resistance, identity, and social change. Known for his unapologetic voice and commitment to activism, Zephaniah’s work resonates deeply with those who seek justice and equality. Benjamin made Newham his home in the 1980s, it was here that he published his first book, Pen Rhythm, while also working within grassroots movements supporting housing, food, and childcare co-operatives. He found both inspiration and solidarity in Newham’s vibrant community - especially around Green Street and the beloved Newham Bookshop, which he described as a space of transformation, political education, and connection. In an interview, when asked about one thing he hopes will never change in Newham, he said: "I hope it will stay multi-cultural and that no single culture will ever dominate." Join us as we reflect on his remarkable legacy and continue his mission of using art for change. Last week, we had the privilege of curating a 'Screen Meets Advertising' panel for The New Black Film Collective #TNBXPO2025, showcasing some of our recent brilliant advocates, collaborators and alumni. Our Screen Meets Advertising panel, expertly chaired by Tolu Stedford, brought together Daisy Ifama (Reframe the Game), Monique Needham (Warner Bros. Discovery Access: Black Britain Unspoken S2), and Davy Lazare (Filmmaker for #MediaTrustFilms 2024). Together, they explored how to thrive - both professionally and personally - at the intersection of the advertising industry and the world of film and television. A huge thank you to our inspiring panellists, our wonderful host and the incredible TNBFC team, including Priscilla Igwe and Jasmine Bernard Brooks, for putting such an outstanding event. You continue to give us hope! ❤️

Feeling excited about the Women's Museum reopening in Barking on the 12th April and their new season themed around 'Desire Lines'. It's a really great cultural community safe space in the heart of Barking and we're delighted to be supporting The New Black Film Collective to start up a film club there this May as part of the BFI Spotlight initiative. So if you'd like to be the first to see a newly commissioned artwork for Spring by Sahra Hersi, made in collaboration with a group of women from Adanna Women’s Support Group, head down to the Women’s Museum, (5 Barking Wharf Square, IG11 7ZQ) at 12.30pm on the 12th for refreshments and creative activities!
