As part of the State Visit to Italy, the SMI was delighted to support a briefing to His Majesty and Italian President Sergio Mattarella on the latest progress being made on “Clean Power for Growth”. Co-hosted by U.K. Foreign Secretary, The Rt. Hon. David Lammy M.P. and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, with an overview from Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Dr. Fatih Birol, the roundtable focused on seizing opportunities related to the clean power transition through responsible leadership, global growth and better supply chains. Recognizing the current context of global markets and trade, the SMI understands that the transition to a sustainable future must be built on fundamental economics and must make good business sense. We also know that global markets and supply chains are deeply interconnected. To realize the growth opportunity of clean energy, we must work at pace across borders to crowd-in the private sector players from finance, energy and real economy industries to get deals done. The scale, speed and systems-level approach needed to build the infrastructure and economy of the future requires bold leadership and innovative approaches from today’s decision makers in public and private sectors. The SMI works actively to enable effective connections to be made and real world implementation to be achieved. #CleanEnergy #SustainableTransition

Air pollution contributes to 43,000 premature deaths in the UK every year and costs the NHS as much as £20 billion annually. Members of the Sustainable Market Initiative’s Health Systems Taskforce Reckitt and Bupa GSK, have come together with 13 other organisations to launch the Camden Breathe Better Charter - a groundbreaking pledge to help clean up the air in the borough, some of the worst pollution hotspots in London. The initiative shows the power of collaboration between the private and public sectors. At the Sustainable Markets Initiative, we believe that local projects like this are crucial in our effort to put Nature, people, and planet at the heart of global value creation. Climate change exacerbates air pollution; by tackling air quality and sustainable transport, Camden sets an inspiring example for the rest of London and cities worldwide. Two weeks ago, the Sustainable Markets Initiative hosted the Terra Carta Roundtables & Exhibition at Hampton Court Palace in London, bringing together hundreds of CEOs and leaders to discuss the next phase of our journey towards 2030. Looking back on the event, we also reflect on the progress made over the past five years. Key achievements: ✔️A global CEO community: Over 250 CEOs delivering across more than 20 industry, financial and regional taskforces/hubs. ✔️Terra Carta: A roadmap for businesses to achieve sustainability by 2030. ✔️Astra Carta: A private sector framework to put sustainability at the heart of space utilisation, development and exploration. ✔️Collaboration: Across industries, regions and countries – for example in healthcare, SMI members have joined forces for renewable energy agreements, notably in China. ✔️Results orientation: A focus on being a ‘do tank’, not a think tank, including members committing to having at least one clean energy building in their portfolios. ✔️Capital mobilization: Trillions in clean technologies and sustainable energy investments. As we look to the future, the path ahead remains clear. This is ‘The Growth Story of Our Time’. #SMITerraCarta #AstraCarta RE:TV

Despite the benefits of regenerative farming, it’s not scaling fast enough. Research by the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Agribusiness Hub found that economic risk and a fragmented support system often deter farmers from making the transition. Today, we are pleased to share that the SMI is taking action to tackle these challenges with a new ‘Routes to Regen’ Lighthouse Project. The project has been launched by leading food and finance businesses within our network including McCain Foods, McDonald's, Lloyds Banking Group, Waitrose & Partners, NatWest, Barclays, Aon, Tokio Marine Kiln, and Lloyd's. Programme managed by The Royal Countryside Fund, the project aims to demonstrate the importance of cross-sector collaboration when it comes to driving the adoption of regenerative farming. By offering participating farmers a comprehensive menu of financial, technical, and peer-to-peer support options alongside expert on-farm guidance provided by Ceres Rural, farmers will receive a bespoke selection of support that suits the needs and ambitions of their farm. The initial phase will take place in the East of England, with an ambition to demonstrate that real progress requires collaboration across the entire value chain. The support options available have been provided by the SMI members leading the work alongside other companies and initiatives operating in the region including ADM, British Sugar, Burgess Farms, Cranswick Country Foods PLC, Farm Carbon Toolkit, LENs Company Ltd, Soil Association Exchange, Sustainable Food Trust and Wildfarmed. The long-term goal of the project is to showcase its learnings and insights to other global organizations, aiming to accelerate regenerative farming at pace and scale around the world. In my lifetime I have witnessed rapid changes in human attitude towards the earth, which is a hopeful sign. Today there is concerted efforts in seeking a new ecological order that focuses on environmental and ecological protection. This effort needs to continue, and I commend SMI and likeminded organizations for taking the lead.” – His Holiness, the Dalai Lama #SMITerraCarta #Nature #Sustainability
