Research institute dedicated to understanding important biological processes at the molecular level.
About us
The MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology is one of the world's leading research institutes. Our scientists are working to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level - providing the knowledge needed to solve key problems in human health. The LMB is responsible for many pioneering techniques, such as methods for determining the three-dimensional structures of proteins and other macromolecules, the sequencing of DNA and the development of monoclonal antibodies. Our scientists tackle difficult, long-term research problems. At the same time they are encouraged to exploit their discoveries – through patents, licensing and business start-ups – helping to advance medical research and improve the UK’s economic competitiveness.

Congratulations to #LMBAlumni Spyros Artavanis-Tsakonas, Iva Greenwald and Gary Struhl, who have been awarded the 2025 Gairdner Foundation International Award for their work on Notch signalling. Together, they identified Notch signalling as a fundamental cell communication pathway which governs cell fate decisions and is implicated in several diseases including neurodegeneration and cancers. Their work on this topic includes key contributions from their times spent in the LMB’s PNAC and Cell Biology Divisions in the 1970s and 1980s. Read more about their research here: https://lnkd.in/gm_7WGEZ
Congratulations to the 2025 Canada Gairdner Award laureates! This year’s laureates represent some of the world’s most significant biomedical and global health research and discoveries. Find out more about these incredible scientists and their award-winning research here: https://lnkd.in/gm_7WGEZ
