Exciting news as March sees the completion of tangential wiring at Colton Junction on The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) project. ⚡🎉 The work was carried out on a unique and complex section of overhead line equipment, marking a key milestone for our hard-working colleagues in the TRU East Alliance. Our specialists undertook the iterative design and dynamic modelling for the works. 🙌 The progress brings us a step closer to ensuring electric passenger trains can begin running between York and Church Fenton later this summer, providing huge benefits to both passengers and the environment. In our latest Connected Careers episode of SYSTRAcast, Technologist Jaden Neal and Engineer Mohamed B. sit down with Graduate Engineer Morgan Coates to share some valuable lessons from undertaking a degree apprenticeship. 💡 Deciding a career path at such a young age isn’t always easy - in this episode, Jaden and Mohamed chat about what led them to ultimately choose a degree apprenticeship, and how perceptions of the pathway have changed significantly over the years. They also discuss challenges, opportunities for growth and understanding your ‘why’. 💭 From work life balance and end-point assessments, to championing your own development as an apprentice, and the importance of having a support network to help with the transition between school or college and the working world - this episode sees our early careers colleagues get thoroughly stuck into the conversation from both a personal and professional standpoint. Catch the full episode via the link in the comments ⬇️ A special thanks to York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority who we work with on the Cornerstone Employer Group and who have supported us with our degree apprenticeship episodes. #degreeapprenticeship #apprenticeship #apprentice #engineeringapprentice #professionaldevelopment

Alongside rail, light rail, bus and active travel all play a key role in the evolution of the UK’s growing transport network. What opportunities can this bring? How can this system come together to drive economic and social benefits? 🤔 Later this month, our transport planning, modelling and business cases specialist David Carter will discuss the wider benefits integrated transport can offer at the Railway Industry Association’s Future of Rail - one of a series of events that will lead and shape the national debate on the future of the rail sector, and tackle some of the industry’s most pressing conversations. 🎤 David, who will share a panel with Andrew Bradley (NHS England), Clare Kingswood (First Rail), Harry Hamish G. (Walk Ride Greater Manchester) and Michael Solomon Williams (Campaign for Better Transport), will highlight the real social and wider economic value of integrated transport to individuals and communities in accessing jobs, education and services - especially for some of the most vulnerable in society. Make sure to chat to David and our other SYSTRA colleagues if you’re at the event! 🤝 #transportplanning #transportmodelling #transport #integratedtransport #RIA #rail #railway #lightrail #buses #activetravel

Alongside Frontier Economics we are delighted to share that the first Interim Report on the UK SHORE programme has now been published by the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom! 🎉 The DfT’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, launched in March 2022 with a total funding allocation of £236 million, was designed to reduce maritime emissions and create skilled jobs across the country by accelerating the research into and development of clean maritime technologies. 💡 Our specialists and the team at Frontier Economics were commissioned by the DfT to carry out independent monitoring and evaluation (M&E) on the programme. The evaluation is a preliminary assessment of early outcomes of some schemes within the programme, and an early portfolio-wide assessment, where data and information were available. It also covers the early process evaluation of the early competition stages for all schemes in the programme. Read the early evaluation observations in full here ➡️ https://loom.ly/qOkIXp8 Our role, driven by our fantastic Social and Market Research team, included: 🔎 Leading the process evaluation 🖥️ Primary research through an online survey to all funding beneficiaries 🚢 Interviews and workshops with key stakeholders across the programme and in the maritime sector The publication of this first report is a key milestone in the evaluation - the final phase of the evaluation will be delivered later this year. Our dedicated specialists have over 40 years of experience in the management and provision of social and market research. 🗣️ "A solution is needed fast if we are going to lift rural regions from the threat of transport poverty." Writing in TransportXtra, our senior bus consultant Marc Winsland looks at the headline mechanisms available to local transport authorities seeking to improve their rural bus services: enhanced partnerships and franchising. Our team recently presented evidence on the challenges faced by rural bus operators and local transport authorities for the Transport Select Committee’s ‘Buses connecting communities’ inquiry. Marc says the scale of the challenge these policy instruments are designed to address is difficult to overstate. Simply put, he says - rural buses are in crisis... Do you agree? As we move towards the new financial year, there is a continued Network Rail focus on the ‘targeted renewal’ of level crossing assets such as barriers and road traffic lights, rather than the wholesale renewal or upgrade of the level crossing protection. 🛤️ Our Level Crossings team have vast experience designing on resignalling schemes, and they’re equally at home when it comes to the targeted renewal of isolated assets. 💪 The scope may only be a ‘simple’ barrier renewal, but our specialists’ expertise and knowledge can provide great value, ensuring the project is protected by understanding the implications of changing barrier types. Find out how we upgraded six obsolete ‘penguin’ style barriers in Wessex for Network Rail, extending their lifespan, improving reliability and maintainability, and ultimately improving safety for members of the public and road users ➡️ https://loom.ly/90QEPS4 VolkerRail Ltd, Atkins, Siemens, Alstom, Trackwork Limited, Ramboll, Amey #NetworkRail #Wessex #levelcrossings #railsafety #railway #rail #railtracks #raildesign #levelcrossingdesign #roadsafety
