#BMSUK is committed to advancing health equity and improving public health outcomes, ensuring that #nooneisleftbehind. This year, we celebrated significant milestones, including the launch of Cancer Equals and a keynote speech on Championing Diversity in Clinical Trials. Most recently, our Black Organisation for Leadership Development (BOLD), Organisation of Latino Achievement (OLA) and Pan Asian Network (PAN) People and Business Resource Group (PBRG) Uxbridge Chapter hosted an insightful event highlighting the critical role of #biomarkers in understanding diverse populations and in enhancing decision-making in medicine. Biomarkers are essential in drug discovery and development, providing insights into disease mechanisms and treatment responses. While biomarkers are not new, the use of surrogate biomarkers presents challenges in medicine discovery and treatment prioritization. Therefore, we must harness technological advancements to provide data-driven solutions. Dr. Elsa Zekeng, CEO and Founder of SökerData, shared her journey, Söker Data's aims, and the importance of understanding genetic and genomic data in underrepresented communities. Her insights reinforce our commitment to patient-centric approaches and the need for inclusive data to drive equitable healthcare solutions. Together, we continue to strive for a future where #HealthEquity is a reality for all.
👩🏽 Did you know? Women are 50% more likely than men to receive the wrong initial diagnosis for a heart attack (British Heart Foundation). During Women’s Health Month in November, it’s essential to highlight gender-specific research and treatments. ➡️ Women experience different heart attack symptoms and risk factors. ➡️ They’re often diagnosed later than men. ➡️ Many diagnostic tests and treatments are still based on data gathered predominantly from men. The problem? Historically, women—and Black and ethnic minority groups—have been under-represented in cardiovascular research. 💡 We are launching a research project on cardiovascular disease, with a particular focus on stroke, to better understand patient experiences—especially among women and Black and ethnic minority groups. Can you help us with this project? #WomensHealth #CardiovascularDisease #ClinicalTrials #Pharma #HeartHealth #HealthcareInnovation
World Diabetes Day and Ozempic in Type 2 Diabetes Research Project Alert! 🌍 World Diabetes Day is a timely opportunity to discuss Type 2 diabetes treatments and the growing role of medications like Ozempic. People from Black African, African Caribbean and South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi) backgrounds are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes from a younger age. (Diabetes UK) Ozempic’s promise goes beyond glucose management, showing potential benefits for cardiovascular health. Yet, ensuring patients have access to such treatments remains a challenge, particularly in underserved areas. We are launching a research survey to understand the patient experience and journey by capturing the adverse events on prescribed medication (Ozempic). This data will allow us to understand vast and wide patient experience in population. 📢 If you want to advance cardiovascular disease research for underrepresented population, get in touch! #WorldDiabetesDay #Type2Diabetes #Pharma #ClinicalResearch #HealthEquity #Ozempic

💡 Did you know? Black and underserved communities are disproportionately impacted by health issues such as breast cancer. 📊 Key stats: 🔎 Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer, often due to barriers in access to healthcare, screening, and treatment (Cancer Research UK (CRUK)). 🔎 Black women (25% black African; 22% black Caribbean) are more likely to be diagnosed with later stage (stage 3 and 4) breast cancer compared to white women (13%) (Breast Cancer Now) 🔎 Breast cancer that’s diagnosed at a later stage is more difficult to treat. 3-year survival rates are lower in South Asian (89%) and black (85%) women compared to white women (91%) (Breast Cancer Now) These gaps reflect a need for change. This Black History Month, let’s amplify the importance of equitable healthcare access, representation in medical research, and support for initiatives that focus on under-served communities. #BlackHistoryMonth #BreastCancerAwareness #DiversityAndInclusion
🌍 October is National Cholesterol Month! 🌍 🧠 Did you know your cholesterol levels could tell more about your heart than you think? This October, for National Cholesterol Month, it’s time to take a closer look at the vital link between cholesterol management and cardiovascular health. 💓 Cholesterol plays a key role in maintaining heart health, but managing it is often easier said than done. High cholesterol levels can silently increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. That’s why it’s crucial to regularly check and manage your cholesterol as part of your overall heart health routine. The National Audit of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Primary Care (CVDPrevent) has published a deep dive report on inequalities in cholesterol management by sex for patients with CVD. Based on data up to December 2023, this report highlights two inequalities: 1) Females with CVD were less likely than males to have a recent prescription for a lipid lowering therapy (LLT) 2) Females with CVD were less likely to achieve threshold cholesterol levels compared to males. These inequalities were present in all age groups, in all geographic regions of England, and were consistent over time. We must address the diversity gap in cardiovascular research. Too many under-represented communities are missing from the studies and treatments that help fight heart disease. Ensuring diverse participation in research is essential to providing equitable care for everyone. Let’s use this month to not only manage our cholesterol but also advocate for more inclusive research that ensures everyone can access the best possible care. ⚖️ How are you managing your heart health this month? Let’s start the conversation. 👇🏾 #NationalCholesterolMonth #DiversityInResearch #CardiovascularCare #CVDprevent
💡 Did you know that mental health struggles can directly impact recovery from cardiovascular disease and breast cancer? 🧠 Mental wellbeing plays a vital role in how patients manage their treatments, recover, and live well.
