The leaders in engineering a fire safe world - UK Chapter

About us

The SFPE (Society of Fire Protection Engineers) is an international professional society representing those practicing in the field of fire safety engineering and fire protection engineering. SFPE is leading the profession as a neutral, international non-profit organization to define, develop, and advance the use of fire engineering, fire protection engineering, and fire safety engineering best practices; expand the scientific and technical knowledge base; and educate the global fire safety community, in order to reduce fire risk. The SFPE UK Chapter was formed in 2014 to act as a mechanism to advance the art and science of fire protection engineering and its allied fields, to maintain a high ethical standard among its members and to foster fire engineering education. The primary mission of the SFPE UK Chapter is to support and represent its members and those interested in fire engineering. One of the main ways of doing this is to provide Continual Professional Development (CPD) and sharing best practice. Membership of the SFPE UK Chapter is open to all people, including members of other Chapters who are interested in the UK fire engineering industry either by residency or work affiliations.

We are delighted to announce our next SFPE UK Chapter CPD event in Manchester: "Assessing Evacuation from Very Tall Structures" presented by Steve Gwynne of University of Greenwich When? 24 April 2025 Where? Material Source Studio (1 Federation Street, NOMA Manchester, M4 4BF) Time? 6pm (with arrival from 5.30pm) The event and networking is free to attend. To register please use: https://lnkd.in/eVJ2wYUz Details about the event: There are currently multiple buildings over 50 storeys in the UK, with a number planned and in development.  Internationally, there are currently multiple buildings over 100 storeys - with buildings planned to go considerably beyond this height. Buildings of this height place significant demands upon fire safety planning - especially related to human behaviour. This seminar will discuss the challenges posed by such massive structures on the assessment of evacuation and protective actions - relating to our conceptual understanding of human behaviour in fire, the supporting data available, the models available to test performance and the guidance in place to develop emergency plans. This event will be kindly hosted by Material Source and sponsored by Maze Fire Consulting. Thank you both! #SFPE #SFPEUK #Evacuation #Tallbuildings #FireSafety #Manchester #FireSafetyCommunity

  • A special occasion to hear from Dr Greg Baker (Halliwell Fire Research and Chair of the SFPE Standards Making Committee on Performance-Based Design) about SFPE’s contribution to a new PBD code.   ‘The Ongoing Contribution of SFPE to Implementing Performance-Based Design' Speaker: Dr Greg Baker, Halliwell Fire Research Date: Wednesday 26 March 2025 Time: 6-7:00pm, followed by networking opportunity. Location: Water Lane Building, 83-84 George Street, Richmond, TW9 1HE. Hosted by Trigon Fire Safety Ltd. Event description: There is an increasing global awareness of, and need for, performance-based design (PBD) in the built environment, and no more so than in the international field of fire engineering. Much of this is driven by the introduction of novel, sustainable building materials and systems such as mass timber, which fall well outside the current prescriptive building regimes. One of the keys to the successful implementation of PBD is a framework that can be consistently and universally applied. At the previous two SFPE PBD Conference, Dr Greg Baker has given presentations on the ongoing work of SFPE International to support and contribute to the successful implementation of PBD in the global fire engineering community. Underpinning these efforts by the Society, is an SFPE Standards-Making Committee which is developing a new SFPE Standard on PBD. In this presentation, Dr Baker will provide an overview of the background to the Standard, a summary of the committee's work to date in developing the new Standard, as well as illustrations of how the new Standard may be able to be applied in practice.   This event is free to attend but spaces are limited. Secure your spot now by registering via the following link: https://lnkd.in/evEpSTT7     We look forward to welcoming you at this event kindly hosted by Trigon Fire Safety Ltd.

  • The SFPE UK Chapter is excited to invite you to our upcoming in-person CPD event in Birmingham: 'Burning Recollection: Improving Memorability to Support Decision-Making during Fire Evacuations' Speaker: Dr. Michael Kinsey (Ashton Fire) Date: Thursday, 3rd April 2025 Time: 17:45 - 19:00 Location: Cundall, 15 Colmore Row, Birmingham, B3 2BH Event description: Building fires pose potentially life-threatening scenarios requiring prompt decision-making and action. Recent years have seen considerable progress in understanding evacuation decision-making, though research into peoples past experience and their memory remains limited. Memory crucially influences how individuals perceive, interpret and respond to information - which during fire evacuations could have vital implications. This talk initially provides an overview of memory theory, examining the core processes of encoding, storing and retrieving memories within the context of different information types and granularity used by people. Memory errors, including forgetting and false memories, will also be discussed. The talk will then outline the decision-making process during fire evacuations, identifying key areas where memory impacts each stage. Based on the literature reviewed, a series of measures designed to enhance information memorability will be presented to support decision-making during fire evacuations. The insights provide recommendations for further research to identify the efficacy of the proposed measures for informing the development of more effective training programs and building design layouts to enhance safety and improve the likelihood that people will respond appropriately during fire evacuations. This event is free to attend but spaces are limited. To register, please use the following link: https://lnkd.in/eD8MasY4 We look forward to welcoming you to this interesting presentation kindly sponsored and hosted by Cundall.
