A truly exciting upcoming seminar at the University of Liverpool, presented by Prof Luke Bisby in collaboration with Liverpool University Women in Science & Engineering on the 28th April 2025! Details on the seminar and registration can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dmz62Bdf
How can fire safety regulations for mass timber buildings in the UK evolve to balance innovation with safety, in light of the Climate Emergency? In collaboration with Liverpool University Women in Science & Engineering, it is a pleasure to host the seminar of Prof Luke Bisby. He will discuss the regulation of fire safety for the built environment in the context of English and Welsh Building Regulations and specifically use the fire safety of mass timber buildings as a lens through which to consider important aspects of the UK building regulatory system, particularly when architects and structural engineers seek to rapidly innovate in the face of the Climate Emergency. Date and time: Monday 28th April 2025 at 5 pm Location: University of Liverpool, Central Teaching Hub, Lecture Theatre A The registration link can be found below: https://lnkd.in/dmz62Bdf #TeamLivUni LivUni - School of Engineering

We are delighted to announce our next SFPE UK Chapter CPD Event in Bristol, the first seminar forming part of the upcoming Timber Series: Timber Series - Seminar I: 'Innovations and Challenges in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) Design' Speaker: Dr. Eleni Toumpanaki (University of Bristol) Date: Wednesday, 7th May 2025 Time: 17:45 - 19:00 Location: Atrium | Ground Floor, 111 Victoria St., Redcliffe, Bristol BS1 6AX Event description: Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) has revolutionized timber construction since its introduction in the early 1990s. CLT offers high strength and rigidity, making it suitable for medium-rise buildings, along with inherent thermal insulation capacity. The use of CLT and timber platform construction has increased over the last 15 years in the UK, with notable examples including Murray Grove (2009) and Dalston Works (2017) in London. The talk will provide an overview of the manufacturing of CLT (including homegrown CLT and the use of secondary timber in CLT), design principles for CLT, moisture management strategies on-site, and design challenges when building taller with timber. This event is free to attend but spaces are limited. Secure your spot now by registering via the following link: https://lnkd.in/esC7bjrV Many thanks to Arup for hosting the event!

SFPE UK Chapter in Birmingham! Many thanks to Michael Kinsey of Ashton Fire for delivering lasts nights CPD Seminar on "Memory Recollection and Fire Safety". Michael gave an overview of research into memory recollection and introduced a number of ways this could be used to improve fire evacuation. Thank you to Cundall for hosting and sponsoring last nights event. Our next upcoming in-person CPD events is the evacuation of super tall buildings in Manchester (tickets for this free event here: https://lnkd.in/eURXt8s7) If you want to receive the updates from our mailing list or, get involved with the committee to help us organise these events, please get in touch at ukchapter@sfpe.uk. #SFPE #SFPEUK #FireSafety #MemoryRecollection #Tallbuildings #Network #FireSafetyCommunity #Birmingham #Manchester

We are delighted to announce our next SFPE UK Chapter CPD event in Manchester: "Assessing Evacuation from Very Tall Structures" presented by Steve Gwynne of University of Greenwich When? 24 April 2025 Where? Material Source Studio (1 Federation Street, NOMA Manchester, M4 4BF) Time? 6pm (with arrival from 5.30pm) The event and networking is free to attend. To register please use: https://lnkd.in/eVJ2wYUz Details about the event: There are currently multiple buildings over 50 storeys in the UK, with a number planned and in development. Internationally, there are currently multiple buildings over 100 storeys - with buildings planned to go considerably beyond this height. Buildings of this height place significant demands upon fire safety planning - especially related to human behaviour. This seminar will discuss the challenges posed by such massive structures on the assessment of evacuation and protective actions - relating to our conceptual understanding of human behaviour in fire, the supporting data available, the models available to test performance and the guidance in place to develop emergency plans. This event will be kindly hosted by Material Source and sponsored by Maze Fire Consulting. Thank you both! #SFPE #SFPEUK #Evacuation #Tallbuildings #FireSafety #Manchester #FireSafetyCommunity
