Last month more than 200 people attended the inaugural Connecting Research Culture Conference 2025, hosted by the Earlham Institute. 🤝 The conference brought together representatives from all cohorts within the research ecosystem - PhD students, postdoctoral and staff scientists, technicians, administrators, senior research leaders and funders. 🔬 During the two-day event we heard from three other Research Institutes who are leading related projects supported by BBSRC culture funding: 💡 Harriet Keep from The Pirbright Institute shared her work leading a cross-institute mentoring programme, building connections and knowledge sharing between peers. 🧠 Dr Clare Stevenson and Leah Milner-Campbell from the John Innes Centre showcased updates on their project to understand, value and celebrate neurodiversity, by developing networks and learning resources for the community. 📝 And Professor Jayne Hope at the Roslin Institute presented their study establishing the mechanisms and best-practice for reporting evidence, impact, and metrics. 💬 Professor Anne Ferguson-Smith, Executive Chair for BBSRC, who introduced the conference, said: “We at BBSRC launched this Connecting Culture Fund to benefit our institutes, and encourage a more collaborative approach to identify and use best practice as we go on our research culture journey. And it is a journey. It doesn't have an end. It is an evolving and really important journey for all of us.” Read more from the conference here: https://okt.to/yomcar

Our researchers have identified a natural genetic variation that provides European sea bass with a 90% survival rate against viral nervous necrosis (VNN), a deadly disease affecting global aquaculture. With no effective treatment and vaccines offering limited protection, this discovery offers a sustainable solution for fish breeding. Findings are now integrated into selective breeding tools to help farmers improve stock resilience.
