Bringing together the companies that run Britain’s railway to deliver for customers and communities

About us

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) brings together passenger and freight operators, Network Rail and HS2 to build a better railway, connecting the country and delivering more reliable services for customers. Investing for the long-term, we are working together to make journeys better and local economies stronger, giving communities the right to new economic opportunities, now and for generations to come. Note: On 24 October 2016, the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) and the Rail Delivery Group adopted the single name of Rail Delivery Group. Updates

  • Our Green Travel Pledge has evolved into Green Travel Data https://lnkd.in/eDcS43p8, with an expanded dataset covering both business and leisure (weekend) travel across almost every direct rail journey in Britain. It provides the country’s most accurate and trusted rail carbon data, showing that rail is greener on 85% of routes and 93.76% of passenger journeys compared to car travel*. A new carbon calculator is now available to help businesses and individuals easily measure travel emissions and support progress towards net zero, ESG goals, and regulatory commitments. Find out more: raildeliverygroup.com/gtd #CarbonData #RailData  *(when compared to travelling by petrol/diesel car, based on the national average of 1.6 passengers per car).

  • Between October 2024 and January 2025, rail travel in Britain saw a record-breaking 380,280 pre-booked passenger assistance requests – the highest number since records began in 2012 and up 21% on the same period last year. Most of these were handled by train operators at local stations, while a third were at big Network Rail hubs. And these numbers only include booked in advance help, not spontaneous 'Turn up and Go' requests, so the real figure is likely even higher.

  • Last month our Rail Data Marketplace (RDM) team along with the Rail Industry Association (RIA) hosted a competition to address two key industry challenges: predicting ‘fix times’ for rail disruptions, and improving accessibility for passengers with additional needs. The Accessibility Challenge focused on identifying where step-free access is missing across the rail network. The winning team from Lancaster University created an interactive tool that maps these gaps, helping to highlight where improvements are most needed for disabled passengers. The Fix Time Challenge explored how long passengers actually need to change trains. The winning team from the University of Leeds built a model that uses station layout and passenger characteristics to recommend more realistic connection times – supporting smoother, less stressful journeys. Both projects show how smart use of data can lead to more inclusive and reliable #rail travel for everyone.

  • Our team recently took part in the Innovation 2025 Impact Stage at the Global Government Forum | Innovation, where Jez Smith shared success stories about our Rail Data Marketplace - an initiative that’s changing the game for #rail data access. The Rail Data Marketplace brings public and private data together in one place, making it easier than ever to collaborate. It helps people find, use, and share data seamlessly, with hassle-free licensing to keep things simple. By unlocking the true value of rail #data, it's helping the industry make smarter decisions and achieve better results. Find out more: www.raildata.org.uk

  • During our staff away day, we were delighted to welcome Rail Minister Peter, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill, who shared the Government's vision for a reformed railway. He highlighted the need for the rail sector to reflect the diverse communities it serves, with strong leadership and accountability driving progress. By working together, we can create a railway that delivers better service passengers can rely on while keeping costs down. As an organisation, we are committed to working together to achieve this and create a better railway for everyone in Britain.

  • “Rail does more than simply transport us from A to B; it’s a vital link to the people, places and experiences and it starts at a station. Stations support a wide range of local businesses and communities that enhance the overall experience of travelling by train. Rail can and must be the backbone of the country’s future growth and environmental ambitions, and rail stations are a key part of that growth.” - Jacqueline Starr, CEO, Rail Delivery Group.

Today we have published a new discussion paper which sets out a place-based approach for delivering better stations across the nations and regions of the UK. The paper, ‘Stations: Engines of Communities’, calls for a new private and public approach to station development to fully realise the economic and social value of train stations within communities. Key areas include: 🟢 Investing in smaller and medium-sized stations as a portfolio – getting away from today’s fragmented approach – using economies of scale to significantly lower costs (such as through Network Rail’s HUB Station design, which uses modern methods of construction). 🟢 Harnessing the full range of funding sources to help pay for station improvements, e.g. retail, advertising, car parking, energy generation, land value capture. 🟢 Using private investment models and commercial expertise to bring together and maximise these different revenue sources. 🟢 Close working in partnership with local authorities, including to use stations to support housing development and, vice versa, for housing development to support station upgrades. 🔗 Read the press release and paper here: https://lnkd.in/ehYPBY4Y Supporters of the project include the Rail Delivery Group (RDG), Arcadis, Costain Group PLC, Egis, and a working group with representatives from Great British Railways Transition Team (GBRTT), Network Rail, Centrus , and Steer. #Stations #StationDevelopment #Community #CommunityGrowth #PrivateInvestment #RailIndustry #UKRail

  • This Women’s History Month, we celebrate women who’ve built successful careers in rail. Shay-Simone started in a ticket office while studying and is now a Driver Depot Manager, while Natalie began in admin and worked her way up to Head of Projects. Their stories highlight the power of seizing opportunities and inspire more women to carve out their own paths in the rail industry. #WHM2025 #WomensHistoryMonth South Western Railway

  • Congratulations to our Smarter Information, Smarter Journeys team for winning the ‘Best Use of Technology – Passenger Impact’ award at last night’s SPOTLIGHT Rail Awards! 🏆 It’s great to see how better customer information is improving the passenger experience thanks to teamwork across the industry. The award-winning project makes train journeys streamlined by keeping digital ticket holders updated whenever there’s a change. #railtravel #rail #railcustomerinformation
