Perenco CCS (Carbon Storage)

The ERDA rig has now sailed away from the Leman 27H platform, marking the end of the first injection of CO₂ in the UK for #CCS, under Project Poseidon.   The Poseidon injection test delivered to plan with a total of 15 injection cycles performed into the Leman gas field, mobilising 11 CO₂ offshore batch refills. The operational programme was performed in a timely and safe manner, without injection issues and, importantly, with the acquisition of an exceptional dataset.   This operation proves not only that Carbon Storage can be a reality for depleted fields of the Southern North Sea, but also that it is possible to widely reuse petroleum production infrastructure to unlock cost effective projects.   The injection test marked a successful collaboration across a number of organisations from the energy, CCS and service sectors, coordinated by the Perenco UK - Petrodec - Dixstone backbone. Perenco CCS (Carbon Storage), as part of The Poseidon Joint Venture, alongside Carbon Catalyst Limited and Harbour Energy, were very pleased to host The Leman 27H CO₂ Injection Test Launch Event in Norwich.    Marking the UK’s first successful injection of CO₂ into a depleted reservoir, this was a chance to celebrate the achievements to date with our technical partners, stakeholders and home teams.  Thanks to everyone who attended and to Matthew Taylor from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Hedvig Ljungerud from North Sea Transition Authority who both spoke, alongside Armel Simondin, Jonathan ("Jo") White and Louis Hannecart. A great time to get together and discuss the injection test start achievement after 18 months of hard teamwork...and look to the future of the UK’s #CCS industry with real optimism. This week we completed the repeat seismic surveys to test CCS MMV techniques at the Project Poseidon injection test. Synchronising with an injection batch of CO₂ from the ERDA rig, the Kingsborg, configured as a seismic source vessel, acquired a series of shots before, during and after injection. DAS VSP (Distributed Acoustic Sensor Vertical Seismic Profile) was measured by the fibre optic cable installed in the injection well, and Spot seismic was recorded on ocean bottom nodes. This repeat data will be compared against the baseline surveys conducted last October, before injection, to assess the seismic response to the injected CO₂. The seismic crew was made up of seven companies with five additional companies involved in operations on the vessel and QCing data onshore. The operation was conducted in 5 days, demonstrating that seismic monitoring for CCS MMV can be light, responsive and quick to deploy. MMV pilot on Injection Test : exciting step for the project !

The Project Poseidon injection test at Leman is progressing at pace and several injection batches have been carried out successfully over the first two weeks of the operation.   Best in class Petrodec logistics have allowed an efficient feed of CO₂ to the ERDA rig as per schedule. Most importantly, cutting edge data is being successfully collected across the injection spread and within the injector well, including at reservoir level. Yesterday marked a significant milestone for Project Poseidon, with the first tonnes of CO₂ successfully injected into a depleted reservoir, the first time this has ever been done in the UK. Reaching first injection is a major operational, technical, and logistical achievement. A huge thank you to our wider teams and technology partners for their incredible work and collaboration. This success is the result of great teamwork across London, Norwich, Paris, Amsterdam, and Aberdeen. The Poseidon JV now moves forward with the test phase, which will provide valuable insights under varying CO₂ injection conditions. An exciting step forward into the CCS adventure!
