GRAPHIC ANALYSIS — Eastern US states are expected to face a nuclear power crunch, with alack of recent requests to extend the operational licences of reactors threatens a fall in nuclear generation capacity. Impacts: ⚡ Increased electricity demand from data centres and AI development will add to pressure on existing generating capacity. ⚡ Only California’s Diablo Canyon plant has so far had a renewal request resubmitted following an increase in power demand. ⚡ The nuclear sector’s almost total reliance on imported uranium concentrate may become problematic in an extended trade war. ⚡ A second licence renewal, extending operational life from 60 to 80 years, is now possible (five applications are under review) but costly. VIDEO ANALYSIS — Populist politicians who respect the bond market are practicing the art of budget juggling — reallocating rather than expanding spending to fund their priorities. But as Nicholas Redman, Oxford Analytica Editor-in-Chief & Director of Analysis, explains, while the short-term rewards are clear, the long-term costs of hollowing out the state can be far harder to undo. #geopolitics #bondmarket #populism

GRAPHIC ANALYSIS — EU defence spending disparities will persist, as high-debt southern states remain reluctant to rearm. Impacts: ✅ Despite quite robust voter support for defence spending in Spain, the government is restricted by the demands of smaller parties. ✅ Public support for defence spending in Western EU states could diminish further if there is a peace deal to end the war in Ukraine. ✅ GDP growth will rise in states that hike defence spending via domestic orders. ✅ The United Kingdom and EU will likely reach a defence pact, which could be announced in May. ☑️ For more actionable analysis of emerging trends and developments in the global political economy, sign up for your free trial of the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief: https://lnkd.in/eQhVpM7v #macroeconomics #EU #unitedkingdom #defensespending

GRAPHIC ANALYSIS — Three years after Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine’s already poor demographic prospects have worsened. Impacts: ▪️ The already comparatively low birth rate and high death rate are likely to worsen, even if the war ends soon. ▪️ The prospects for a post-war economic recovery will be limited by labour market shortages. ▪️ Only a comprehensive and stable peace deal will encourage the return of up to 6 million refugees who have left Ukraine since February 2022. ▪️ In a pessimistic scenario, Ukraine’s population could shrink to fewer than 10 million by the end of the century. 📧 For more geopolitical insights into Ukraine and other regions around the world, sign up for your free trial of the Oxford Analytica Daily Brief. https://lnkd.in/eQhVpM7v #ukraine #population #geopolitics
