About us
Current Future Generations Commissioner for Wales: Derek Walker The Commissioner's role is to be the guardian of future generations. This means helping public bodies and those who make policy in Wales to think about the long-term impact their decisions have. The Well-being of Future Generations Act requires public bodies in Wales to think about the long-term impact of their decisions, to work better with people, communities and each other, and to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change. The general duties of the Commissioner : “Promote the sustainable development principle, in particular to act as a guardian of the ability of future generations to meet their needs and encourage public bodies to take greater account of the long-term impact of the things they do.” “Monitor and assess the extent to which well-being objectives set by public bodies are being met.”

Diolch to Jack Price and Greg Notman from Wales Centre for Public Policy | Canolfan Polisi Cyhoeddus Cymru for presenting their report on A local authority-led transition to net zero. Thank you also to Zoe Jennings and Chris Murray from 3Ci (Cities Commission for Climate Investment) who shared their work to support local authorities in securing the necessary long-term finance for achieving net zero. Pleased the committee has taken on board points I made in my evidence including the need and the opportunity to improve diversity and inclusion in the skills pipeline for emerging industries in a green economy. The F Word! I want us all to use it. I want you to use it more often. I want politicians, our First Minister and policymakers to use it. I want teachers, nurses, journalists, sports players, bus drivers, shopkeepers, parents, grandparents to use the F word* in our daily lives. Today is ten years since the pioneering Well-being of Future Generations Act became law. Cymru is the only country in the world with a Well-being of Future Generations Act, which was passed on the floor of the Senedd on March 17, 2015. The nation’s commitment to the well-being of future generations takes inspiration from indigenous wisdom and the Seventh Generation Principle and since the Act was passed, several other countries across the world are acting in the interests of the not-yet-born. The approach mandates Welsh Government and public bodies like health boards and local councils to improve our social, cultural, environmental and economic well-being and take long-term action, and it has led to a progressive school curriculum, a greener direction for travel in Wales and a new way to define prosperity, free universal school meals for primary school children and Wales becoming second in the world for recycling. //https://lnkd.in/e3weegJ2 The Office of the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales Jane Davidson Peter Davies Sophie Howe
