The Lancashire and South Cumbria Pathology Service is a collaborative hub and spoke pathology network made up of four acute provider organisations who together provide diagnostic testing services for over 1.8 million people living in Lancashire and South Cumbria. The four partner Trusts involved in the L&SC Pathology Service are the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMB), East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELTH), Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LTH) and Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTH), who have delegated matters for the development of a single service to be managed through a joint committee arrangement (the LSC Provider Collaborative Board). Our aim is to transform pathology services and patient pathways by ensuring a coordinated approach for local services that drives the adoption of new technology, seeks best value, service quality and investment to improve patient outcomes. The Department for Health and Social Care are funding a significant number of bursaries for colleagues who are regulated Health and Care Professionals to undertake Masters level clinical research delivery leadership qualifications aligned with the Clinician Researcher Credentials Framework. This is a unique opportunity to significantly upskill the clinical workforce to become research active and take on Co-Investigator and Principal Investigator roles. It is an ideal opportunity for colleagues in specialist roles to undertake research-focussed career development and may be suitable for colleagues working in under-represented areas of research expertise. The qualifications include Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas and Full Masters Degrees. There are different entry levels suitable for those with and without existing qualifications and experience, making the bursaries suitable for those who have no or limited research experience and those currently working in research delivery. The qualifications are designed for learners with busy work schedules who will be studying part time. They focus on the practical elements of clinical research delivery and consist of two key elements: Online modules - flexible access to theoretical modules that provide an insight into the delivery of clinical research. Research Practice Experience – workplace-based modules where learners put their learning into practice by working on clinical research studies under the supervision of a senior researcher. The bursary application process for regulated health and care professionals to apply for NIHR course fee bursaries for 2025/26 is now open. As part of #HealthcareScienceWeek, our team had an incredible time at Burnley College, engaging with students and showcasing the exciting careers available in #HealthcareScience. Gillian Crankshaw, Stephanie Williams, Rehanara Khatun, Maisie Stockton, Mohammedamin Patel, Zain Patel, and Amirah Kathrada joined forces to deliver inspiring talks about their career journeys, different entry pathways, and the vital roles that #BiomedicalScientists and #ClinicalScientists play in patient care. The morning was packed with career talks, giving students real insights into the skills, training, and opportunities within the field. The afternoon brought interactive sessions, where students got hands-on experience exploring the fascinating world of healthcare science—from laboratory techniques to diagnostic processes. Seeing their enthusiasm and curiosity was truly rewarding. Outreach events like these are crucial in raising awareness and inspiring the next generation of healthcare scientists. Principal Clinical Scientist in Biochemistry at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Jonathan Clayton has been inspiring the next generation of Healthcare Scientists with a careers visit to meet students at Edge Hill University. Jonathan attended the university’s latest careers fair to showcase the diverse range of healthcare science careers available in the NHS and to highlight the important role that pathology plays in patient care. Reflecting on his own career and the reasons why he thinks it’s important to inspire the next generation of Healthcare Scientists, Jonathan said: “It’s really important for current healthcare scientists to shine a light on the profession. Many of us are not patient facing, so people don’t always consider the role we play in the patient journey, but as many as 80% of diagnoses involve laboratory medicine. “It’s really important that we make young people aware of what we do, so that we can inspire the next generation of budding healthcare scientists to pursue a career path that not only gets them involved in the healthcare pathway but gets them qualifications as well! “I came into healthcare science after an undergrad degree, master’s degree and then 7 years or so in academia, and I knew immediately that I made the right decision to leave the academic world and start a career in healthcare. It’s Healthcare Science Week (10-16 March) and we're celebrating the diverse range of healthcare science careers available within the NHS. Last week, colleagues at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had the pleasure of welcoming T-Level students to the LTH Pathology Laboratory, giving them an inside look at the vital role pathology plays in patient care. Pathology is at the heart of healthcare, with 70% of medical decisions relying on laboratory tests. From diagnosing diseases to guiding treatment, our work behind the scenes is essential in delivering the best outcomes for patients. It was fantastic to see the students’ enthusiasm, as they explored different pathology specialisms, learned about the latest diagnostic technologies, and engaged with our dedicated scientists. Visits like these are crucial in inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals and showcasing the exciting career pathways within pathology and healthcare science. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this visit a success.
