Understanding USMCA: What Retailers and Manufacturers Need to Know In the past 24 hours, I’ve had several conversations asking about USMCA and how it impacts manufacturing in Mexico. Here’s a quick breakdown for anyone navigating this new trade environment: What is USMCA? The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is the updated version of NAFTA, originally enacted in 1994 to create a free trade zone across North America. The goal: encourage trade, economic cooperation, and allow each country to do what it does best—what economists call comparative advantage. In 2020, USMCA replaced NAFTA, retaining much of the original framework while introducing key updates. What’s Happening Now? As of February 4th, the U.S. has imposed a 25% tariff on many imports from Mexico and Canada—with important exceptions. USMCA-compliant goods remain duty-free. That means: Made (or substantially transformed) in North America + meets origin rules = 0% tariff. For example, while raw materials like gold or diamonds may originate elsewhere, if the casting is performed in the U.S., Mexico, or Canada and the piece is set in Mexico or Canada , it qualifies as USMCA-compliant—and therefore duty-free. At Frederick Goldman Inc., nearly all of our products—except for some of our contemporary metal rings—are made in North America. To build on our capabilities and develop supply chain optionality, we are actively investing in new technologies, skills, and processes to expand our U.S. manufacturing footprint.
