By the end of 2022, there were 108.4 million forcibly displaced people around the world including 35.5 million refugees, over half of whom were children. As teaching quality remains the most important factor in students’ learning, managing teachers of refugees is critical to ensuring equitable and high-quality education for all. Using funds from our Alexandria Schools Trust, we support Ministry of Education supervisors in the Middle East to use the best available research-based evidence when coaching teachers. We do this through our Evidence-Based Supervision programme, which helps build the capacity of supervisors and teachers to use English as a medium of instruction. In Lebanon and Jordan, the impact of our work extends to Syrian and Palestinian refugees. Find out more about our expertise in education for refugees and displaced learners: https://lnkd.in/eSTSCfKH

For over 30 years, we have supported refugees and displaced learners to increase their life chances through high-quality education. Cornwall Council and the Council of the Isles of Scilly’s Refugee Assist programme was funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. On the programme, we helped refugees from Ukraine, Afghanistan and others to find work by identifying training options, applying for jobs, and preparing for interviews. Participants were economically inactive or at risk of social exclusion, and our support helped them to build a better life for themselves in their new home country. EDT’s work begins making an impact when a child takes their first steps into the world of education, to be welcomed by skilled and confident practitioners. Children who are behind in language development at the age of five are 11 times less likely to reach expected standards in mathematics by the age of 11. On the Department for Education-funded Early Years Professional Development Programme, we supported early years practitioners to improve their practice and children’s outcomes, including in early mathematics. One participant shared how the mathematics module made a positive impact on the children in their setting. Discover our latest impact review at edt.org/impact24

We have nearly 30 years’ experience of supporting education in emergencies and refugee settings, and working in fragile conflict-affected states. A large part of this is our research, which makes an important contribution to the global evidence base on education and skills. It guides our approaches and solutions to the challenges of teaching refugees and displaced learners, and enables us to make evidence-led recommendations to policymakers.
