📣 Digital Science is excited to share that the chapter, "Driving Forward the UN Sustainable Development Goals Through Transatlantic Collaborations," co-authored by our own Ann C., Carlos Areia, and Shannon O'Reilly is now published as part of the book North American and European Perspectives on Sustainability in Higher Education! 🌎📘 The chapter analyzes over 6.5 million publications to explore the effectiveness of transatlantic research collaborations and how they contribute to SDG impact. They found that this kind of partnership not only promotes open research but is also more likely to be used in policy and patent documents. This chapter builds on our presentation at the Transatlantic Symposium on Sustainable Development, hosted by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in February 2023. 🔍 This study used Dimensions and Altmetric data, including publication and linked information (institutions, SDGs, altmetric mentions such as policy and patent, and much more) inside Google BigQuery (GBQ). The peer review system is crucial for ensuring research quality, but as publications grow, so do concerns about reviewer availability and workload. Despite an increase in publications, the number of experienced reviewers (5+ years) remains limited. In her article, "The Reviewer Paradox: More Publications, Fewer Peers?", Hélène Draux, Senior Data Scientist at Digital Science, analyzed peer review trends using Dimensions on Google BigQuery. Her findings reveal that reviewer demand, especially in Humanities and Social Sciences, has outpaced supply, with factors like reviewer fatigue and uneven expertise distribution contributing to the shortage. This issue reflects broader structural imbalances in academic publishing, including the concentration of research funding in a few regions.
