Engineered microbes could produce sustainable supplies of rare metals vital to a range of industries, according to Edinburgh scientists featured in a new Government report. Professor Louise Horsfall was among a select group of UK researchers who contributed to a Government publication on the power of Engineering Biology. One of our extraordinary scientists featured in a new Government report has highlighted how engineered microbes could produce sustainable supplies of rare metals vital to a range of industries. 🔬 Engineering Biology report showcases Edinburgh expertise 🔬 Engineered microbes could produce sustainable supplies of rare metals vital to a range of industries, according to Edinburgh scientists featured in a new Government report. Professor Louise Horsfall, one of the select number of researchers involved in the report, said: 'Engineering Biology is a platform technology that has the potential to impact so many aspects of our daily lives. Its use in sustainable mining and as a tool to improve recycling will provide significant environmental benefits compared to current practice. At a time when global politics is intensely focussed on critical minerals, the importance of transitioning to a circular economy for metals cannot be overstated.' 📣 Earth Fellows programme – call for project proposals 2025 🌍 Edinburgh Earth Initiative is inviting research proposals for fully funded student fellowship projects to support interdisciplinary work in the university’s climate and environment challenge areas. We invite The University of Edinburgh researchers to propose a research project related to climate and environment that is suitable for a postgraduate or PhD student to work on for 9 hours a week for 9 months. EEI will cover the employment costs of the student for successful projects. ✅ Build your team’s capacity – funded fellowships allow students to focus on impactful research projects for 9 hours per week over a 9-month period. Projects should lay the foundations for further funding or research.   ✅ A chance for interdisciplinary collaboration – projects must include academics from two or more Colleges and intellectual input from different disciplines.  ✅ EEI support – allow our experienced team to help you develop the project brief and recruit, onboard and line manage a student fellow for your project.  ✅ Networking opportunities – join the EEI community and meet project partners from across the university.
