Our 3rd-year Informatics students have showcased their incredible assistive robotics projects at the annual Student Design Project Trade Fair. A diverse array of projects were on display, from pool-playing robots to Rubik's Cube solvers. The System Design Project is an undergraduate course involving the construction of a system of significant complexity under conditions designed to give insights into real- world teamwork. Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science students, Aagoon Chakraborty and Sai Vaishnavi Chundru were both exhibiters at the trade show. Here's what they had to say about their SDP experiences: "The course pushed us to step outside our comfort zones, apply our learning in real-world scenarios, and adapt quickly when things didn’t go as planned. SDP was a great experience that not only strengthened technical skills but also gave us a new level of confidence in working through complex challenges as a team." - Aagoon Chakraborty, part of the SDP team behind CarromBot "SDP was a challenging and rewarding experience that taught us how to take an idea from concept to reality. Winning the Peer Vote and Best Pitch prizes at the Trade Fair was a proud moment that made all the late nights worth it!" - Sai Vaishnavi Chundru, part of the SDP team behind PiggyBank+ 🏆 Read more and see the list of SDP 2025 Prize winners here: https://edin.ac/4jonDhY

Based in the heart of Edinburgh, the largest institution of this kind in the UK and one of the largest in Europe.
About us
In 1997 external reviewers, appointed by the University of Edinburgh to report on Informatics activities, wrote in their paper: “Even a casual look at the world around us makes clear that we are living in the information age. As scientists come to understand informational phenomena (language, thought, computation, inference, communication and the like), they will enable ever more powerful technological advances. Equally, the technology of computing and communication prompts scientific understanding. Thus the natural science and the building of systems feed each other.” A year later the School of Informatics was created through the merger of the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Centre for Cognitive Science, Department of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute, and Human Communication Research Centre. It originally formed part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, but since major university restructuring in 2002, has been part of the College of Science and Engineering. Currently the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh is a world-leading centre of research and teaching in computation, information and cognition. It is located in the Informatics Forum and the nearby Appleton Tower. It hosts a cohort of over 1,600 students from over 75 countries worldwide. It employs over 220 academics and 100 professional services staff. Based on REF2014 data, the School of Informatics is the largest grouping of AI researchers in the UK. Research within the School is carried out across six institutes; each of these manages a portfolio of funding and specialist facilities while creating and nurturing a community of research staff and students. Academic staff are appointed to the School and choose to belong to one or more institutes.

Vivek Iyer, a PhD student at the School of Informatics supervised by Alexandra Birch-Mayne, was awarded the Apple fellowship in Machine Learning and AI. Vivek’s research tackles the 'long tail' of languages and cultures in NLP. One strand focuses on multilinguality, adapting NMT, speech models, and LLMs for low-resource settings, while the other explores multimodal, multicultural applications like personalization and transcreation, with publications in top ACL venues like EMNLP, EACL and NAACL. The Apple Scholars in AIML PhD fellowship programme supports emerging leaders in academic research through funding as they pursue their PhDs, mentorship with Apple researchers, and internship opportunities. Scholars are nominated by their universities and are selected for the program based on their innovative research, leadership, and commitment to advancing their fields. Now in its sixth year, the fellowship program has supported more than 100 emerging leaders in computer science and engineering at the graduate and postgraduate levels. During Apple internships, Scholars have co-authored more than 50 publications, resulting in acceptances at top venues around the world and several spotlight paper awards. 🔗 Read the 2025 Apple Scholars in AIML announcement: https://lnkd.in/gh4Y29qX

Life-spans across the world are increasing, but this often overlooks the health-span: the period of life spent healthy and disease-free. So how do we ensure that later life is a healthy life? Tonight, Professor Jacques Fleuriot, Personal Chair of Artificial Intelligence at the School of Informatics, will join a panel of experts at the sold-out Edinburgh Science Festival event "Who Wants to Live Forever?" at the Bayes Centre. The panel includes Prof Gillian Mead (Elderly Care), Daria Ihnatenko (Patient and Public Involvement), Dr Emily Adrion (Global Health Policy), and Prof Neil Mabbott (Immunology). They will discuss what healthy ageing means, the societal challenges we face, and how science and AI can support a healthier future. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/ejWFGXJs

Professor Barbara Webb led the research that developed a prototype ‘hairy robotic gripper’ that mimics ants’ hairy jaws in an attempt to make robotic systems much more effective at picking objects up and moving them around. "Now we can see how their antennae, front legs and jaws combine to sense, manipulate, grasp and move objects." 🔗 Read the full story: https://edin.ac/4iTe9v0
