About us

Children First Derby was established in 1974 by a local Derby resident, Etheleen Mildred Wigley, after reading about the death of a neglected child. The charity operates from its premises on Leopold Street and provides three bespoke services; Supervised Family Time, Family Support and Mentoring Services. Our Supervised Family Time Service for looked after children, enables families to spend time with each other in a welcoming, child friendly and safe environment. By providing a safe space, we aim to ensure that contact sessions are meaningful and fun for all the family members that attend. The Family Support Service utilises trained volunteers who work with families in the local community, providing one to one support and information. The support can be offered to any family with children up to the age of 18, living at home. The purpose of the service is to support parents to move forward positively with their lives which in turn has a positive impact on their children. We also offer one-to-one Mentoring Services to young people aged 10 to 18 in the local community. By building a positive relationship with the mentee, the mentor encourages and supports the young person to make positive decisions regarding their life and helps them to engage with their local community. We always welcome volunteers. If you would like to volunteer with us, or to find out more about the current vacancies at Children First Derby, please visit our website on the link below.

  • Here is a case study from one of our service users, we have decided to post this in the hope that our followers and supporters can see first-hand how and where we are making a difference in the local community. Mother 1 is a single Mum with two young children. Her eldest child has developmental delays and is exhibiting traits of Autism. Mum stuffers from stress & anxiety and struggles with managing and understanding her daughter’s behaviour. Mum does not have much of a support system of family and friends so feels very alone. The house the family live in had mice and the children cannot play outside as there are often needles thrown in the garden from drug users living in the local area.   Mother 1 was referred to our Family Support Service by her daughter’s school when mum had said she was struggling and requested help. Mother 1 was matched with one of our experienced family support workers who offered weekly visits to help build her confidence and self-esteem. Mother 1 was encouraged to attend our Parenting program to support with understanding and managing her daughter’s behavior.   Mother 1 was referred to our growing families minds project where her garden was cleared and made safe for her children to play in. Mother 1 was supported to begin the process of having her daughter assessed for Autism. As things improved and Mother 1 became more confident, she continued to be supported by one of our trained volunteers who is a part-time schoolteacher so had a good understanding of children’s needs. Mother 1s volunteer helped her explore more appropriate educational settings for her daughter and offered her emotional and moral support. We also successfully submitted a grant application to enable T to purchase her children a new bunkbed and mattresses.    Parent’s quote "Having a Family Support Worker that took the time to get to know me and understand me was great. She was patient and just showed that she cared. I now have a lot more of a positive outlook on life and my family’s situation due to the support from Children First Derby. Thank you all very much."

  • Dear Students of Derby University, On behalf of our entire team, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for hosting such a wonderful awards night. Your dedication, creativity, and hard work truly made the event a memorable one. In total there were 4 groups who hosted events and everything raised between them will be donated to Children First Derby. Your generosity and support mean the world to us and will make a real difference to the lives of those we serve. It’s inspiring to see students like you coming together to create positive change, and we are deeply touched by your efforts. Thank you once again for your kindness and for choosing to support our cause. Unfortunately we were only able to attend one of the events but we are thankful none the less.

  • Our generous supporters at Cedar + Co continue to show us their loving support as they donated this huge bunny to go towards our Elvaston Castle Easter stall! ✨ Hop on down on the 10th April to be in with the chance to win this cuddly guy (if you can guess their name 😉)! All proceeds from our Easter activities will go directly towards supporting vulnerable children and families in the Derby community. We were named as Cedar + Co's charity of the year earlier this year 💖 Thank you so much Jennifer Sparks and Neil King
