📝 Our position paper on low-carbon products is OUT! 🏭 These are everyday essentials such as cement, steel, fertilisers, and aluminium that can be produced using CCUS technologies to bring down emissions and accelerate Europe’s decarbonisation efforts. To make low-carbon products the norm, we need smart policy. That’s why our paper outlines several key policy recommendations: 🔹 Develop a clear trajectory for carbon intensity reductions and create harmonised definitions for low-carbon products 🔹 Launch a bold EU low-carbon products strategy with strong market signals 🔹 Make green public procurement count by aligning procurement rules with carbon intensity standards 🔹 Accelerate the implementation of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) recognising CCUS as key solutions. Great to see Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens visiting CCSA member enfinium’s Parc Adfer Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility in Deeside, Wales. 🏭 Enfinium’s plans to retrofit carbon capture at Parc Adfer are a fantastic example of how the UK’s waste sector can play a leading role in the transition to net zero. Once operational, the facility could remove 125,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually—transforming everyday waste into a tool for combatting climate change. Projects like this attract investment, support local jobs, and help build the infrastructure needed for a low-carbon economy. And with the right policies, EfW facilities across the country could become key players in the UK’s carbon removal strategy. 🔎 This kind of innovation is exactly what we need to scale up to meet the UK’s net zero targets ambitions. CCUS is vital for industrial decarbonisation, job creation, and delivering clean energy - making it crucial that we sustain and build on today's progress. #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero | #EfW
Last week the Secretary of State for Wales Rt Hon Jo Stevens visited our Parc Adfer facility to learn how it supports the circular economy in North Wales by taking unrecyclable waste and turning it into homegrown energy. Our Chief Operating Officer Jane Atkinson CBE and plant manager David Cottis also showcased our plans to install carbon capture technology by 2030 to boost green economic growth in Deeside and turn Parc Adfer into the largest carbon removal project in Wales. The Welsh Secretary was kind enough to share her views on our ambitions plans during her visit 👇🎥🏴 Wales Office/Swyddfa Cymru Net Zero Industry Wales HyNet

🔎 CCUS in the UK: Key Takeaways from the UKCCSRC Webinar Last week’s UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre (UKCCSRC) webinar provided a deep dive into the UK’s CCUS progress, with the CCSA’s UK Director Mark Sommerfeld updating on key developments, including: ✅ Track-1 Clusters (HyNet & East Coast Cluster): £21.7bn committed over 25 years, with Financial Close for Net Zero Teesside Power (set to be the world’s first commercial-scale gas CCS power plant) and Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP). Mark emphasised the urgent need for Financial Close on HyNet to maintain momentum. ✅ Track-2 Clusters (The Acorn Project & Viking CCS): and the urgent need for further updates and clarity in the Spending Review to advance these projects, ✅ Other clusters aiming to deploy along similar timescales that require transparent allocation frameworks to keep pace. ✅ First CO2 Injection Test: Poseidon (led by members Carbon Catalyst Limited & Perenco) successfully injected CO₂ into the Leman gas field—a major milestone! ✅ The 2035 Vision: A self-sustaining CCUS market supporting 50MtCO₂/year storage and 50,000+ jobs. Nicola O'Dowd from Department for Energy Security and Net Zero highlighted: 🔹 The UK’s vast 78Gt CO₂ storage potential (25% of Europe’s capacity). 🔹 £54bn projected value for transport/storage networks by 2050. 🔹 Progress on business models for power, hydrogen, and industrial CCUS. John Barraclough from the Environment Agency discussed: 🔹 Regulatory frameworks ensuring safe, scalable carbon capture. 🔹 Streamlining permitting processes for industrial projects in England. As Jen Roberts (UKCCSRC Chair) emphasised, CCUS is critical for: ✅ Clean power by 2030 ✅ Net zero by 2050 📽️ Missed the webinar? 🗣️ “A once-in-a-generation opportunity” — that’s how VPI CEO, Jorge Pikunic, rightly describes carbon capture and storage, and Viking CCS proves why. 💼 This project is poised to provide a major boost to the Humber’s decarbonisation efforts, while strengthening the regional economy, creating up to 20,000 jobs across the wider build-out, and unlocking billions in private investment. As we move ever closer to the conclusion of the Comprehensive Spending Review, it’s essential that Track-2 projects like Viking CCS — along with other Track-2 and Track-1 expansion projects, and clusters aiming to deploy on similar timelines — receive clear and timely signals from government. 🏭 VPI is urging a firm commitment to be recognised as the anchor emitter for Viking CCS, which would allow the project to progress and play a critical role in decarbonising a hard-to-abate sector. Their proposal to retrofit CCUS technology onto VPI’s existing power station in Immingham offers a cost-effective and efficient pathway to reducing emissions from flexible power generation. 🔎 With the UK’s largest port as part of the cluster, Viking CCS could also unlock £30bn in taxable revenues by 2050 through the import of CO₂ from European emitters — a massive opportunity for both the UK economy and international decarbonisation. 📖 Read more from the Grimsby Telegraph here 👉https://lnkd.in/eJYhjB-x

The recently announced Clean Industrial Deal marks a crucial moment for Europe’s industrial decarbonisation. But ambition alone won't get us to net zero. In this context, CCUS represents an opportunity for Europe to decarbonise without de-industrialising. The next phase must focus on delivery: 🔹 Clear funding mechanisms 🔹 Regulatory certainty 🔹 Infrastructure development The time to act is now – if Europe is to lead the green transition while maintaining its industrial competitiveness, policymakers must provide the CCUS industry with clarity and support needed to deliver on such ambitions, because Europe is and must remain a frontrunner in CCUS. Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Hydrogen UK Annual Conference and Awards in Birmingham, where I chaired a panel discussion on ‘Hydrogen Projects: Steps to Achieving FID’ - and we were very grateful to Minister Sarah Jones who stayed to listen to the updates and insights from the industry leaders - including addressing some of the barriers to reaching FID.. Kim McCann SLR Consulting Joe Seifert Hydrogen Duncan Dale Stratkraft Neil McDermott Low Carbon Contracts Company Michael Seager Storegga Our session explored the key challenges and opportunities in advancing hydrogen projects to FID, including supportive policy frameworks, investment signals and offtaker certainty, efficient and timely planning and permitting and the critical role of collaboration across the sector. The UK Government’s recent shortlisting of 27 projects under HAR2 is a welcome step in scaling hydrogen. But to maintain momentum, urgent clarity is needed on Track-1 expansion, Track-2 sequencing, and CCUS clusters to align with hydrogen deployment. Read more on this here: https://lnkd.in/eNmv5CM9 🔎 The Hydrogen UK Conference brought together policymakers, industry experts, and stakeholders to discuss the latest developments in hydrogen deployment, innovation, and the policies needed to scale the UK’s hydrogen economy. A big thank you to Hydrogen UK for organising such a valuable event and for fostering these essential conversations. The CCSA looks forward to continuing to work with partners across the energy sector to drive forward CCS-enabled hydrogen and CCUS deployment as part of the UK’s transition to net zero
