🌪 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬, 𝐁𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬: 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐖𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 Climate change is reshaping the world as we know it, and storms are no exception. As ocean temperatures rise, cyclones are becoming more powerful and frequent, making them harder to predict and more destructive. This presents a significant challenge for forest restoration projects that rely on young trees to capture carbon and restore ecosystems. At Artio, we use the latest science to better understand and predict how these storms are changing and what it means for forest restoration projects on the ground. Take the Araku Valley Livelihoods Project in India, for example. In 2014, Cyclone Hudhud tore through the region, destroying over 50% of newly planted trees. And when we modelled future storms under different climate scenarios, the results weren’t reassuring. From our predictions, wind speeds could increase by up to 4.5%, making storm damage even worse in the future. So, what can we do? • 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 - We model storms, to better understand risk before planting •  𝐒𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 - We advise on how early or later stage projects can protect themselves by for example using windbreaks, resilient species, and better site selection •  𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - We provide insurance and mitigation tools to help projects protect against these risks 🌍 Read more about how we model storms in our latest blog: https://lnkd.in/eejg7UA5 #Storms #ClimateRisk #CarbonInsurance
