World Health Day 2025 calls to strengthen efforts toward prioritising the long-term health and well-being of women and prevent maternal and newborn deaths. A healthy mother is the foundation for a healthy child; what benefits women, benefits children and, in turn, benefits society and our future. This interconnectedness drives much of the work at NUS Medicine. Through the efforts of the CHILD (Centre for Holistic Initiatives for Learning and Development), NUS Bia-Echo Asia Centre for Reproductive Longevity and Equality (ACRLE), and the Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW), we are dedicated to advancing the health of women and children. The findings of the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) study, based on principles laid out by the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), have also influenced practices and policies around maternal and child health and development in Singapore. The NUS Medicine Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme (TRP) has also developed second-generation clinical ageing clocks, which are able to provide more accurate predictions of mortality and functional measures of ageing. With the team expanding their research to Asian data sets, we are another step closer to understanding the factors driving the healthspan of populations across Asia. Follow us to learn more about research at NUS Medicine. #WorldHealthDay2025 #WomensHealth #ChildHealth #ChildrensHealth #HealthyLongevity #ageing #healthspan #lifespan

Optimizing Diet for Healthy Aging- Powerful data from our collaborator team Frank Hu Marta Guasch Ferré
Associate Professor | Section of Epidemiology, Dept of Public Health, University of Copenhagen and Novo Nordisk Foundation CBMR, Adjunct Associate Professor | Dept of Nutrition, Harvard Chan School of Public Health
Our paper is now out in Nature Medicine! - We have examined optimal dietary patterns for healthy aging. - Healthy diets rich in plant foods, with low to moderate intake of healthy animal foods and lower intake of ultra-processed foods, was linked to a higher likelihood of healthy aging (reaching age 70 years free of major chronic diseases, with cognitive, physical, and mental health mantained). - Since staying active and independent is a priority for both individuals and public health, research on healthy aging is essential. - Check out below 👇 Anne-Julie Tessier, Dt.P, PhD Frank Hu https://lnkd.in/dwGcKCNX

A healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle is essential, but do we truly understand it? In light of the International Women's Day, we had the pleasure of attending an insightful seminar by Prof. Cuilin Zhang MD, MPH, PhD, Chair Professor & Director at the Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW). This seminar was part of the National University Hospital Grand Rounds series chaired by Executive Director, Adj A/Prof Cheng Ean Chee - highlighting the interconnectedness of overall well-being and its implications, even in specialised fields such as oncology. Thank you for the inspiring sharing on how a healthful diet and lifestyle can improve women’s health outcomes. #TeamNCIS #NUHGrandRounds #WomensHealth #CancerCare

Women around the world are affected by a health gap characterised by a disparity in diagnosis, treatment and care delivery, among others. The World Economic Forum in collaboration with the McKinsey Health Institute found that only 23% of clinical trials focus on women in lower- and middle-income countries, despite them suffering 54% of the women’s health gap. To mitigate this, the Global Alliance for Women’s Health is pushing for finance, research, and action to close the health gap #ForALLWomenAndGirls. NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, led by our Dean, Yap-Seng CHONG is proud to be part of this initiative. This effort is aligned with our vision, to Inspire Health for All. The School conducts research into women's health across all health conditions and through the science, advocates for health policies and their effective implementation to drive better health outcomes for women in Singapore. The Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW) was established to study the health issues faced by women and often ignored by healthcare professionals, and to lead efforts in promoting women’s well-being in collaboration with global partners. Besides, the Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) study found that women have up to 12 times the risk of developing diabetes later in life if they have experienced gestational diabetes during their pregnancy. This has resulted in health policy changes in Singapore so that pregnant women are monitored for this risk throughout pregnancy and educated on lifestyle changes to reduce it. Findings from the WEF-led report on the economic and societal potential of closing the women’s health gap can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eyWVX9_n By investing in women’s health, we are not only securing the well-being of individuals today but our collective potential for a healthier future. A future where women can achieve their fullest potential, in allyship with men, is a better future for all. #NUSMedicine #IWD #InternationalWomensDay #WomenAndHealth

Food and culture play a huge role in our well-being but there is still so much we do not know. That's why we’re proud to partner with the Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW) in a research trial exploring how a Mediterranean diet—adapted to an Asian palate—can impact Asian women’s well-being. As part of this initiative, we’re providing nutritious, balanced meals that enable participants to experience the health benefits of eating a Mediterranean diet with familiar flavours. Food isn’t just sustenance, it’s part of our culture and a driver of long-term well-being. Excited to see how this research shapes the future of women’s health in Asia! #IWD2025 #GloW #SodexoMYSG #WomensHealth Abel Ariza Lionel Leong Loh Wei Jie Jaspreet Kaur Ong Li Xuan Priscilla Goh JoJo Qiong Wu Claire-Marine Varin

Catching Zzzzs is crucial: 😴 A study led by the Global Centre for Asian Women’s Health (GloW) at NUS Medicine, in collaboration with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, has uncovered a crucial link between sleep and the risk of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) in women with a history of gestational diabetes (GDM). ⏰ 🚨 Director of GloW Professor Prof. Cuilin Zhang MD, MPH, PhD, Dr Xin Yin, Research Fellow and their team of scientists found that women with a history of GDM who slept six hours or less per night have a 32% higher risk of developing T2D. Regular snoring was associated with an increased risk of 61%. Prioritizing quality sleep can help reduce long-term diabetes risk.
