World Health Day 2025 calls to strengthen efforts toward prioritising the long-term health and well-being of women and prevent maternal and newborn deaths. A healthy mother is the foundation for a healthy child; what benefits women, benefits children and, in turn, benefits society and our future. This interconnectedness drives much of the work at NUS Medicine. Through the efforts of the CHILD (Centre for Holistic Initiatives for Learning and Development), NUS Bia-Echo Asia Centre for Reproductive Longevity and Equality (ACRLE), and the Global Centre for Asian Women's Health (GloW), we are dedicated to advancing the health of women and children. The findings of the Growing Up in Singapore Towards healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) study, based on principles laid out by the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD), have also influenced practices and policies around maternal and child health and development in Singapore. The NUS Medicine Healthy Longevity Translational Research Programme (TRP) has also developed second-generation clinical ageing clocks, which are able to provide more accurate predictions of mortality and functional measures of ageing. With the team expanding their research to Asian data sets, we are another step closer to understanding the factors driving the healthspan of populations across Asia.
