Multidisciplinary research for agriculture of the future.

About us

BioSense Institute has been founded to focus multidisciplinary, game-changing and needs-driven research and disseminate it to a global ecosystem of forward-looking stakeholders. BioSense cross-fertilizes two most promising sectors in Serbia: ICT and agriculture. Multidisciplinary research is performed in the fields of micro and nanoelectronics, communications, signal processing, remote sensing, big data, robotics and biosystems, with a common goal to support the development of sustainable agriculture and create a positive impact to the lives of people. Apart from its research excellence, BioSense is recognized for its emphasis on the generation of open innovations, aiming to engage the region strategically in the path of economic growth. Our approach to research directly involves all relevant stakeholders – agricultural community, government bodies, business sector and citizens. We work together with various actors to co-create the future and drive structural changes in the agrifood sector far beyond the scope of what any organization or person could do alone. Given the diversity of the agrifood ecosystem, BioSense promotes across the entire value chain principles of integrated collaboration, co-created shared value, cultivated innovation ecosystems, unleashed exponential technologies, and extraordinarily rapid adoption of advanced ICT technologies by traditional sectors such as farming and food production. We believe that innovation can be a discipline practiced by many, rather than an art mastered by few. And that’s where we focus our research.

  • We’re happy to announce three upcoming online SoilWise demonstration events! The SoilWise Data and Knowledge Repository is an open-access platform developed under the EU-funded SoilWise Project. This repository aims to make European soil data and knowledge FAIR—Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable—by integrating scattered and heterogeneous information into a single, actionable access point. Each of the three demo events is tailored to a specific audience - land managers, business and farming professionals, and research community - offering insights from different perspectives to ensure everyone can get the most out of the tool. In Serbia, advisors know climate change is real — but do they have the tools and time to act? That’s where the #ClimateSmartAdvisors project steps in. Branko Sikoparija from BioSense Institute, a National Coordinator for Serbia, highlighted a key challenge: while advisors are aware of climate change and its impacts on agriculture, many lack the time or resources to expand their knowledge and support farmers with practical, climate-smart solutions. #ClimateSmartAdvisors aims to bridge that gap — by motivating advisors, building their capacity, and adapting tools and procedures to the Serbian context. It is a month until our next General Assembly, this time in Spain, where we will provide clear direction for the year ahead, and a strong sense of collaboration across the network. #ClimateSmartAgriculture #Serbia #BioSenseInstitute #FarmDemo #SustainableFarming #AgriInnovation #Serbia #BioSense

  • 🌱 SONATA Twinning what is it about? New #HorizonEurope project, coordinated by #BioSense, uses the expertise in ecology and high precision agriculture with the focus on integrating Nature-Based Solutions for sustainable, more secure and environmentally sound future. "Serbia as other countries are facing a combined climate and biodiversity crisis. It is therefore vital that we implement actions to mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity, and increase human well-being. Nature-based solutions (NbS) address these and other societal challenges through actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore ecosystems. SONATA is therefore a very timely project that will test these actions in Serbia as NbS work with nature for nature and people", Leonard Sandin, one of the key members of the SONATA team. 🎯 More details on SONATA project read in the first press release. https://lnkd.in/eb4fPVeX

  • 💡 It started as an idea...

✨For the beginning of the week, something interesting! 🔸How to turn ideas into impactful projects🔸 🌱 "The idea for SONATA first came to me five years ago!" – dr Tijana Nikolic-Lugonja, SONATA coordinator.   🔙 Flashback to 2018: Tijana joined the #EUROSITE network, a global network bringing together experts to develop a natural infrastructure monitoring system. Collaborating with top scientists from the Netherlands, Norway, and Germany, she gained deep insights into the latest methods for modeling and mapping natural landscapes. 💡 While listening to EUROSITE webinars, she met Jose Manuel Álvarez-Martínez, now a key link in the SONATA team. At the same time, she had countless discussions with her mentor, Vladimir Djurdjevic, a climatologist from the University of Belgrade, about how climate change was impacting Serbia's landscapes and ecosystems. 🐿️ One example struck her: European ground squirrels—a grassland habitat specialists—were disappearing as their habitats were destroyed due to climate shifts. The urgency of nature conservation became clear. 🔬 Meanwhile, BioSense Institute was advancing in crop type mapping technology, and Tijana had a breakthrough: "We can apply the same methods to natural landscapes - not just agriculture!" 🌍 And so, in 2020, the first SONATA project idea was born! But... the application was never submitted. Why? 🤔 📌 Find out in Part 2: "SONATA Success Story" – A video interview with Tijana! #NatureBasedSolutions #Biodiversity #Sustainability #HorizonEU #ResearchImpactEU #EUInnovation BioSense Institute, NINA - Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, VITO, Universidad de Oviedo, IHCantabria

  • 🌱🐝 On December 23, 2024, the Serbian National Annual Meeting and CoDIE session of the ClimateSmartAdvisors project took place in the BioSense Institute, bringing together key stakeholders from agriculture: farmers, academia, industry, advisory services, NGOs, and policymakers. This impactful event was organized and hosted by National Coordinator Branko Sikoparija and Climate Smart Coach Aleksandar Ivezić, both from the BioSense Institute, which is proud to be a project partner. 🌿 The discussions centered around climate-smart agricultural practices, soil health, and biodiversity conservation, with a spotlight on the synergy between fruit growing and beekeeping and the implementation of innovative biological strategies. The workshop provided valuable insights and laid the groundwork for CoDIE experiments planned for 2025, paving the way for a more sustainable future in agriculture. The Institute is proud to be at the forefront of these efforts, contributing to the global movement for climate-smart solutions! 💚✨ #ClimateSmartAdvisors #BioSenseInstitute #Sustainability #Serbia #Agriculture #Biodiversity #Innovation
