Exciting news for New Zealand’s red meat sector The formal launch of negotiations for a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India is exciting for New Zealand’s red meat sector. India’s rapidly growing economy and expanding middle class present significant opportunities for high-quality, nutritious animal protein and New Zealand is well-positioned as a trusted and responsible trading partner. MIA Chair Nathan Guy is currently in India as part of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s business delegation, alongside key industry leaders, to explore how we can strengthen ties and create long-term, mutually beneficial trade opportunities. Beyond sheepmeat, the potential for by-products known as the fifth quarter is huge -- from offal for pet food to high-value serum exports for India’s pharmaceutical industry. But this partnership isn’t just about trade. It’s about collaboration -- helping India develop cold storage infrastructure and training to support its economic and social objectives. A big thank you to Prime Minister Luxon and Minister Todd McClay for championing the red meat sector on the global stage.

The voice of New Zealand’s red meat industry
About us
The Meat Industry Association is the voluntary trade body representing New Zealand's red meat processors, marketers and exporters. Our members produce some of the world’s highest quality, nutritious and hormone and antibiotic free food for consumers in over 120 countries worldwide. As New Zealand’s second largest goods exporter, the red meat industry generates $9.3 billion in export revenue annually, exporting 85% of total production. It is also New Zealand’s largest manufacturing industry, employing more than 25,000 people in 60 locations around the country. Every year, the industry processes more than 28 million sheep and cattle, of which 90% is turned in value-added products. As the leading voice for the industry, the MIA works to ensure the sector’s ongoing prosperity. We do this through advocacy across key issues including trade policy and market access, technical and regulatory issues, workforce issues and science and innovation. We co-ordinate programmes and information to support members. And we invest in leading-edge, high-value technologies and science on behalf to increase the profitability and sustainability of the red meat processing sector.

Congratulations to Renyu Zhang -- the winner of the New Zealand red meat industry’s first-ever Dragon’s Den competition! Renyu, a senior scientist at AgResearch, took top honours with his innovative idea to transform mechanically deboned meat (MDM) into a high-umami meat flake – a concept with exciting potential as a protein enhancer and snack ingredient. Beating out 42 entries and four other finalists, Renyu has secured up to $10,000 to develop a business case and advance his idea into a research project. His breakthrough could create new value from lower-value meat streams, strengthening New Zealand’s global food innovation profile. Sirma Karapeeva, CEO of the Meat Industry Association, praised the bold, forward-thinking ideas that emerged from the competition, all aligning with the industry’s goal of increasing export value. A huge thank you to all the participants, judges, and supporters who made this event a success. The future of red meat innovation is bright!
