PhD candidate with a passion for meat science. Graduate of Bachelor of Science Majoring in Food Science and Postgrad Diploma in Applied Science at Lincoln University.

Last week I had the privilege of attending the Red Meat Sector Conference in Wellington. The conference was a great platform to hear around issues within the meat sector currently, but also to hear about the opportunities for development. The Meat Industry Association of New Zealand scholars also attended a workshop at the development kitchen with chef Dale Bowie, who provide great insight into the need for strong market of New Zealand meat, along side labeling that helps consumers understand how use the cut of meat to its fullest potential. I’m excited about the future of the red meat sector, and look forward to contributing to the science behind the sector

What a privilege to be able to attend the Red Meat Sector Conference in Wellington earlier this week. It was insightful to listen to aspects of the whole value chain from gate to plate and connect with many different people involved throughout the industry. Topics such as improving on farm sustainability, insights into promoting New Zealand’s premium products, and challenges and opportunities in relation to red meat nutrition, all showcased the future thinking and innovation of the industry. A personal highlight was the afternoon spent with development chef Dale Bowie, founder of the Development Kitchen. Dale emphasised the fact that there isn’t much difference in what we deem high quality and lower quality cuts of meat. This shows the calibre of New Zealand meat is high, and proves why it is worth the attention of not only overseas markets, but also domestic consumers. It is an exciting industry to be apart of and I look forward to applying what I learnt to my studies and future opportunities. A big thank you to the Meat Industry Association of New Zealand for the opportunity, and selecting me to be apart of their scholarship program. #RMSC2024
