Critical raw materials play a pivotal role in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, e-mobility, defence and aerospace 🔋✈ With demand increasing exponentially and global trade tensions rising, ensuring a secure and sustainable supply is more important than ever. Norway represents about 40% of the EU's supply of silicon and holds a significant position in this landscape. As a key supplier, Elkem ASA is invested in efforts to strengthen supply chains and support the #GreenTransition. Last week, Elkem's Marianne Stigset, VP of Communication and Public Affairs, and Erik Stenback, senior corporate specialist in sustainability, participated in Innovation Norway in Europe's Green Industry Forum, contributing to a round table discussion on critical raw materials and how to strengthen value chains, combine decarbonisation and competitiveness, improve framework conditions and drive innovation for greater sustainability. 🌱 Key takeaways: ❗ Securing critical raw materials: Silicon metal is classified as both a critical and strategic material by the EU and the US. The EU is undergoing deindustrialisation at a rapid pace, so ensuring the continued supply of silicon and ferrosilicon is vital to protect the region's critical value chains. ✅ Strengthening sustainable competitiveness: Measures to strengthen the competitiveness of European producers of critical raw materials include providing clean and affordable energy to the industry, ensuring stable framework conditions and applying efficient trade mechanisms to create a level-playing field. 💡 Innovation and technology developments: Elkem is investing significantly in initiatives to reach emission-free production of silicon products, such as replacing carbon with biomass as a reduction material, carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon looping. The challenge now is to strengthen the business case for these initiatives, making them commercially viable in a globally competitive industry. 🤝 Public-private partnerships: Strong public-private partnerships are essential for bridging resource gaps, spreading risk, and leveraging complementary competencies to support the green transition. Today marked a significant milestone for green innovation and sustainability in the maritime industry. Together with our partners North Sea Container Line and MPC Container Ships ASA in Haugesund, western Norway, we inaugurated NCL VESTLAND, one of two low-emissions container vessels that will enable more effective and environmentally friendly shipping transportation. 🚢 NCL VESTLAND and NCL NORDLAND are the first vessels in Norway to be powered with bio-methanol. They will replace three conventional container ships, increasing total capacity, efficiency, traffic stability and safety, while reducing overall emissions. Designed to use both conventional fuel and green methanol, they are rigged for net-zero future at sea. 🌍 This development strengthens the green transportation corridor for Norwegian industries to deliver strategic materials to European markets. With stops at key industry hubs such as Salten, Mo i Rana, Orkanger, and Ålesund, these ships enable larger weekly shipments of Elkem's silicon products to European customers in sectors such as automotive manufacturing, construction, renewable energy, and the defence industry, and enable growth and jobs along the Norwegian coast. 💡 The project received NOK 13.7 million in funding from Enova SF, the state enterprise owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, and NOK 60 million from the NOx fund (Næringslivets NOx-fond), the Norwegian business sector’s fund to reduce emissions. 🤝 The consortium is a testament to the power of cross-sectoral partnerships in driving European industry’s competitiveness and sustainability. When combined with favourable framework conditions and support mechanism, Norwegian industry is able and willing to make green investments to continue to grow in Norway. “The collaboration behind this venture," explains Elkem CFO Morten Viga, "Exemplifies the power of partnerships in enhancing industrial competitiveness and sustainability, while fostering green value chains across European markets.” 📷 Credit Appex / NCL
