The second call within the National Growth Fund programme NXTGEN Hightech is now open for proposals. NWO and NXTGEN Hightech invite researchers and other interested parties such as companies and research organisations to form consortia and send in proposals focussing on developing the new generation of high-tech equipment in the Netherlands. Specifically, new knowledge is sought within six application domains: energy conversion and storage | laser satcom | biomedical manufacturing technology | semicon equipment | micro factories for composites | handsfree agrifood. The revised EMA reflection papers provide the state-of-the-art 3Rs tools that can already be used and opportunities for the future. 🚀 𝐔𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧-𝐨𝐧-𝐚-𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 🌍💡 In the Netherlands organ-on-a-chip (OoC) is seen as a groundbreaking new technology, since it can transform drug development by replicating the key functions of human organs on a microfluidic chip. This animal-free technology has the potential to transform the Life Sciences & Health sector. It is expected that it will contribute to sustainable and structural economic growth, improved drug development and most importantly, improved quality of life. 🇳🇱🫱🏽🫲🏽🇸🇪 Small countries, big impact Laura Windt recently joined Health~Holland as project lead for OoC and had the honor of presenting at a roundtable on Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sweden. Together with Laura Duran, they explored how OoC could advance precision medicine. The key takeaway? Collaboration between small, smart countries can make a big impact. 🔬🇨🇭 A second work trip was organized to Switzerland, where Laura Windt and Ernst Nagel attended the workshop on organoids and organ-on-a-chip at CSEM. The Netherlands and Switzerland are both at the forefront of organoids and OoC technology, and the aim was to set up and strengthen strategic partnerships between Dutch and Swiss stakeholders to drive implementation of OoC. While several partnerships already exist, additional networking efforts from Health~Holland will elevate these collaborations and facilitate new ones! 💫 Promising future It was a pleasure meeting all the participants during the events and discussing where these disruptive therapies and technologies are heading. The future looks incredibly promising, with advanced therapies set to transform the quality of life for patients and organ-on-a-chip as a preclinical tool to improve the overall drug development process.
