🤝 Tractebel celebrates one year of innovation and collaboration with THORIZON, a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology developer! ⚛️ February 2025 marked the first anniversary of Tractebel's strategic partnership with Thorizon for the development of the Thorizon One molten salt reactor that will contribute to shaping a carbon-neutral future. Tractebel supports Thorizon in its journey as an SMR developer to start building a first-of-a-kind reactor by 2030.     💡 Over the past year, Tractebel has provided engineering services in the fields of neutronics, civil and layout design, radiation protection, waste management and decommissioning. Our experts have also worked on the conventional island and supported our partner for SMR developers’ critical missions, such as cost estimations and technical due diligence. Thorizon and Tractebel teams are working closely together to finalise the Initial Safety Analysis Report, which will be subject to a joint regulatory review. The Thorizon One SMR will use radioactive waste (spent fuel) from existing nuclear power plants to produce carbon-free energy. The reactor's unique cartridge design enhances safety, reduces time to market, and lowers costs, enhancing nuclear power's sustainability and efficiency. ♻️ By leveraging its expertise as the Belgian nuclear fleet's Responsible Designer and SMR frontrunner, Tractebel helps Generation IV advanced modular reactor developers such as Thorizon close the fuel cycle and make the circular economy a reality in the nuclear sector. The focus of the discussion was on how these leading financial institutions can continue to remain 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 while embracing 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. One of the key challenges they are addressing today is the need for 24/7 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐲 — a critical requirement as the digital transformation accelerates. This is where the role of 𝐧𝐮𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 becomes increasingly relevant. Paul was privileged to represent THORIZON and give a presentation on how nuclear can play a vital role in providing a reliable and sustainable energy source and off course why THORIZON is the missing link in the nuclear ecosystem. In true Franco-Dutch spirit, our COO Laure Claquin even rode a bike on stage with a hourglass that looked just like our cartridge – because why not blend innovation with a touch of fun? 😄 But what made the event truly special was how we managed to break down complex concepts into simple, relatable terms. It's not every day you get to explain delayed neutron control in a way that everyone can understand and appreciate! The highlight of the ceremony? 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐄𝐀 ! 🇫🇷 2025 is already off to a strong start with two key visits to CEA sites, driving valuable exchanges and expanding collaboration opportunities. After being awarded the 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 2030 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 in 2024, Thorizon has engaged with CEA to advance molten salt reactor development. As part of this, we are visiting CEA facilities across France to explore critical collaboration areas for the coming years.
