Studio for New Realities

2024 was a year of getting things done:   First of all, we celebrated our 5th anniversary!   Rotterdam Oostflank’s guiding framework was approved and construction preparations have started in District U.   It was a year of buildings: we are proud of the realisation of the new Pavilion in Plaswijckpark (go see and play!), the design for the Goede Buren residential blocks that has been approved, and the redevelopment plan for the Auditorium+Gallery being ready for further elaboration.   In an intensive process we drew up the strategy for Brussel Buurtstad (´Neighborhood City’), we mapped out the implications of sustainability regulations on our future environment, and started next steps for the Structuurplan for Schiphol's Center Area.   In addition, we worked hard on expanding our expertise – strategic planning, master planning and architecture – with a strong design team that makes this possible. In 2025 we will continue to deepen this following content lines, to be able to develop ‘user-machine’ buildings, vibrant communities, strong neighbourhoods and smart, sustainable urban systems.   A big thanks to our clients and collaborators for the good cooperation and trust of the past year. Literally opening up this blockage by strategic removal of some of the buildings (and keeping valuable ones!), to be able to connect the city to the river and create space for suitable typologies. PAVILION PLASWIJCKPARK IS OPEN We are pleased to announce that the Plaswijckpark’s new Pavilion is now open and in use. Over the past few years, we have greatly enjoyed designing a new playground pavilion and restaurant in Rotterdam’s best-known family park by the Bergse Achterplas. The Plaswijck Pavilion adds an imaginative and stimulating play paradise, a building as ‘usage machine’, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces.  Strategic interventions add an address at the lakeside, improved routing, strengthened the landscape, and enriched the overall park experience. 5 YEARS OF NEW REALITIES At the end of June we gathered family, friends and clients to celebrate the studio’s fifth anniversary. As much as we reflected back on our projects and collaborations, we also looked forward and asked our guests: how do you see the future city? Their answers were seemingly straightforward and simple: places of community and companionship, a suitable home for everyone, pleasant and green public spaces… But we all know that in reality this can be difficult to achieve. So the real question is: how to make change happen? SCOTTISH DESIGN AWARDS The Glasgow District Regeneration Frameworks, which we have worked on with Austin-Smith:Lord and Urban Movement, have been nominated for the Scottish Design Awards 2024 in the Master Planning category. The DRFs set strategic high-level frameworks for the physical, social and economic development of the city for the next ten years. The first two phases, led by ASL and Jeroen Zuidgeest at MVRDV, won the award in the same category for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020.
