🌍 Islands are leading the energy transition—but how do we overcome the challenges? At the Samsø Catalysation Workshop, hosted by NESSIE partner Samsø Energiakademi, experts tackled key barriers to decarbonization, from financing and grid instability to workforce development. A key takeaway? Local capacity-building is essential for long-term success. 💡 To accelerate island decarbonization, the workshop identified three core strategies: 🔹 Upgrading infrastructure – Strengthening grids and integrating storage solutions to support renewables. 🔹 Sustainable financing – Leveraging co-financing and EU funding to lower project costs. 🔹 Building local capacity – Training workers to install and maintain energy systems, ensuring communities can manage their own transition. This is where NESSIE plays a key role. By developing Short Advanced Courses (SACs), hands-on internships, and E-Campuses, NESSIE provides essential training for the future energy workforce, ensuring island communities gain the skills to implement and sustain renewable energy projects. 🔗 Read more about the workshop on the NESSIE blog: https://lnkd.in/eUdVbCWH Thanks to all the participants and organizers! 🌍 How can we inspire the next generation of energy leaders? On Monday, University of Groningen students from the Masters in Islands and Sustainability shared their research for NESSIE Project EU on how to recruit and engage young people—especially women—in the energy transition. With women making up just 22% of the EU27 energy workforce, there’s work to be done! The research was based off of interviews with Firda students, and focused on their experience both in deciding their study path in an energy-related field, and in their educational environment itself. Key takeaways: 🔹 Hands-on experience like internships is essential. 🔹 Mentorship and teacher influence shape career paths. 🔹 Clearer, relatable communication about ET opportunities is needed. 🔹 Women thrive in peer-led networks where they feel supported. By fostering practical learning, building supportive communities, and showcasing women in the field, we can empower the next generation to lead the energy transition. 🔗 Read the full blog post on the NESSIE website: https://lnkd.in/d-9jSvFS Thank you to Frank Hiddink from Learning Hub Friesland and Roeland P. 👨🎓 NESSIE welcomes University of Groningen students for research collaboration 👩🎓 On September 23, Learning Hub Friesland had the pleasure of hosting an international group of Master students from the faculty of Spatial Sciences of the University of Groningen. Earlier this year, the university reached out to Learning Hub for a real-world research project, and we were excited to propose an assignment connected to the NESSIE initiative. The students selected to explore NESSIE over the coming months as part of their Joint Multidisciplinary Research Project. Their focus will be on student recruitment and student engagement, investigating how we can inspire prospective vocational school students and foster interest in energy transition careers. The students will also explore how the curriculum can be designed to meet the needs of aspiring energy transition technicians and engineers. We’re looking forward to seeing their research unfold as they contribute valuable insights into shaping education for the energy transition sector through NESSIE. Good luck Ashley, Mazen, Mika, Clio and Kate!
