👨🎓 NESSIE welcomes University of Groningen students for research collaboration 👩🎓 On September 23, Learning Hub Friesland had the pleasure of hosting an international group of Master students from the faculty of Spatial Sciences of the University of Groningen. Earlier this year, the university reached out to Learning Hub for a real-world research project, and we were excited to propose an assignment connected to the NESSIE initiative. The students selected to explore NESSIE over the coming months as part of their Joint Multidisciplinary Research Project. Their focus will be on student recruitment and student engagement, investigating how we can inspire prospective vocational school students and foster interest in energy transition careers. The students will also explore how the curriculum can be designed to meet the needs of aspiring energy transition technicians and engineers. We’re looking forward to seeing their research unfold as they contribute valuable insights into shaping education for the energy transition sector through NESSIE. Good luck Ashley, Mazen, Mika, Clio and Kate!

Multi-year agreement between Agratas and Faraday Institution includes funding for pilot of three PhD studentships. In response to the pressing demand for high-end skills in the #UK battery sector, two leading organisations have teamed up to develop the talent of researchers. Agratas will now fund three four-year PhD students from a cohort of 16 that began the Faraday Institution’s PhD enrichment scheme last October. As well as funding, the three students will also benefit from industrial internships at Agratas. Of the beneficiaries, Becky Larner from the #UniversityofOxford is researching advanced manufacturing as part of the Nextrode project, and is working with Professor Patrick Grant and Dr Guillaume Matthews. She says: ‘I was attracted to this project because I find energy storage technology really interesting and want to help make it more sustainable.’ Tihana Štefanić, also at Oxford, is working on the multiscale modelling project with Professor David Howey and Professor Charles Monroe. Tihana comments: ‘Being part of the Faraday Institution’s training programme has made the first few weeks an overwhelmingly positive experience. I am looking forward to developing safer #battery #technology in my DPhil and hope to continue working on sustainable energy solutions in my future career.’ The third recipient, Chris Smith at the #UniversityofCambridge, is researching battery degradation alongside Professor Dame Clare Grey and Professor Michael De Volder. Chris says: ‘Battery research ties together my fascination with fundamental materials #chemistry whilst aligning with my #environmental consciousness. I am delighted to be collaborating with Agratas as this facilitates academia and industry working together striving for a better future, whilst simultaneously giving my research real-world impact.’ The Faraday Institution is the UK’s independent institute for electrochemical energy storage research, skills development, market analysis and early-stage commercialisation. Its bespoke PhD training programme equips doctoral researchers with deep subject area expertise, myriad soft skills and broad knowledge of the industry ecosystem in which they will work. The 16 students on the institution’s enrichment scheme are in addition to 85 PhD researchers on or who have completed its PhD training programme and a further hundred PhDs affiliated with Faraday Institution projects. Agratas, which is part of the #TataGroup, designs, develops and manufactures high-quality, high-performance, sustainable battery solutions for a range of applications. Photo by Markus Spiske

🚨 PhD scholarship available! 🚨 Be part of RACE for 2030's Pathways to Net Zero Precincts (NZP) project 💡 ♻ 🏡 ⬇ The project’s overarching research question is: How do we integrate appropriate design, technologies and governance models to enable net zero to work effectively in different urban fabrics? This PhD scholarship focusses on the policy and practice of how to integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DER) with the grid. The NZP project as a whole will address three key research gaps: 🔍 The identification of NZP certification pathways 🔌 NZP distributed energy resources and grid integration pathways 🤝 NZP governance pathways The candidate does not require specific qualifications in these areas but specific experience in related net zero practice will be highly valued. As case studies are central to this research, the candidate must possess good interviewing skills. Case studies may also generate quantitative data which may need to be analysed. 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gBhkjugS 📄 Applications: email A/ Prof. Nasrin Aghamohammadi (nasrin@curtin.edu.au) Peta Ashworth OAM Josh Byrne Peter Newman Dean Economou Curtin University Faculty of Humanities Petra Tschakert #PhD #PhDOpportunity

Beyond tradition: Successful career paths to full professorship We (Lisa-Marie Steinkampf, Sandra Buchholz, Jessica Ordemann, and I) just submitted our first paper on professoral careers with data from the prof*panel! The study is based on data from the first longitudinal survey study on career paths of professors in Germany, a project by the Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung GmbH. German academia has faced a multitude of changes over the last two decades, including new alternative academic pathways to a professorship based on the Anglo-Saxon science system, such as junior or tenure track professorship. Our study investigates the patterns of academic career trajectories to a professorship that have emerged due to these changes. It looks deeper into the relationship between those patterns and determinants of academic success, such as previous career choices, scientific productivity and the chosen scientific field. If you want to learn more about the career patterns we found, you can read the preprint on SocArXiv: https://lnkd.in/eYEHVMtD

Interesting article in The Irish Times today highlighting how the graduates of the Technological University sector are more likely to be employed after leaving college. Much of this comes down to the TU sectors long standing relationship with Irish industry. In Munster Technological University the Enterprise Ireland Technology Gateway Network drives a significant level of this interaction through research and academia. MTU has 4 Gateways Centre for Advanced Photonics & Process Analysis (CAPPA), Centre for Applied Bioscience Research (CABR), Nimbus Research Centre and IMaR Technology Gateway delivering both high quality industrially driven research and providing both graduates and undergraduates with experience in working with industrial partners. #EUinmyregion Southern Regional Assembly Enterprise Ireland Northern and Western Regional Assembly https://lnkd.in/dZBCMmQU
