“Land of the free, home of the brave.” The closing lines of the U.S. national anthem have become a national refrain—invoked by presidents, citizens, critics, and admirers alike. What does freedom actually mean in the American context both historically and in the present? Who gets to claim it? Join us in collaboration with the KNAW for this important event with four thought-provoking speakers delving into the core of what freedom means. Registration is free of charge!
Hoe vrij is 'The Land of the Free'? Last week, we hosted the wonderful Russell Shorto, together with our partners of the Rode Hoed! 📖 At an insightful event moderated by Andrew Makkinga, Russell shared insights from his latest book 'Taking Manhattan', tracing New York's roots from the ‘purchase’ of Manhattan by the Dutch West-India Company to the fated takeover by the British. The book paints a picture of a diverse, innovative and hardy city forging its own path. 🗽The evening featured a storytelling performance by Elyzabeth Gorman on one of New Amsterdam’s prominent female residents from 1664. 🎥 Click here for the video: https://lnkd.in/ekpVRgJT #newyork #americanhistory #takingmanhattan #storytelling (photo's by Gerrit Serné)

This coming Monday the 24th the John Adams Institute welcomes R. Jisung Park, environmental economist at The Wharton School. I'll be speaking with him about his book 'Slow Burn: The Hidden Costs of a Warming World'. We'll be joined by Nick Kounis, head of financial markets and the sustainability team at ABN AMRO Bank N.V. Jisung Park is optimistic. He knows how easy it is to be overwhelmed by climate change, especially when it is framed as a looming global disaster. He hopes that his research will empower us to act, by focusing on the tangible impacts of climate change as they unfold right now in our daily lives. The typical conversation around climate change, says Park, misses its most pressing costs. What happens to those breathing in the smoke from distant wildfires? How do natural disasters disrupt education when schools and infrastructure are destroyed? He describes climate change as a “silent accumulation of a thousand tiny conflagrations” affecting health, productivity and social mobility and exacerbating inequality. Park reminds us that tackling the challenges of climate change begins with addressing its effects where they matter most—in our communities, here and now.
