This week, the Coastal Dynamics 2025 Conference is taking place at the Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal! A delegation of Deltares experts is attending and will present posters and participate in seminars. Our scientific director Bregje van Wesenbeeck will also deliver a keynote speech. Bregje’s keynote will focus on science and the valorisation of working with nature and natural processes. She will discuss the current state of knowledge on inclusion of nature into coastal management practice, looking at muddy salt marsh and mangrove coasts. In doing so, she will draw on experimental research and numerical with marshes, flood plain forests, and mangroves to advance our knowledge of vegetated foreshore systems in damping waves and surges. Looking at management implications, Bregje will draw parallels with sandy coastal systems in the Netherlands, where management of beaches and dunes has evolved over the last decades. The Coastal Dynamics Conference series is one of the most important meetings for scientists in the fields of nearshore dynamics and coastal evolution. This year’s Conference, the 10th edition, has the theme 'Living with a Dynamic Coast'. Scientists and experts from around the world will attend and share their insights and research results. 🔗 For more information, including on where you can find our colleagues during the conference, check https://lnkd.in/erBbP_FM Deltares delegation: Bregje van Wesenbeeck | Robert McCall | Anne de Beer | Tim Leijnse | Richard Marijnissen | Arjen Luijendijk | Roshanka Ranasinghe | Johan Reyns | Jowi Miranda #EnablingDeltaLife #CoastalDynamics #CoastalManagement #conference #keynote

🖥️ Last week saw the very first iMOD user day in Germany! 40 participants, including iMOD users from governments and consultants across Schleswig-Holstein, Niedersachsen, Hessen, Hamburg, and Bremen, gathered in Hamburg to: - engage with iMOD cases from across Germany, focusing on groundwater modelling for research and policymaking; - take a deep dive into iMOD5's advanced functions; - gather insights into iMOD Suite's new developments and experience live demos; - exchange lessons learnt from the Dutch National Groundwater Programme; and - look ahead to future iMOD developments and user requirements. Participants also heard from Deltares colleagues, who shared their insights, offered support and technical demonstrations, and explained the developments in iMOD5 and iMOD Suite. Throughout the day it became clear that MODFLOW6 is the foundation of all models, and that the 3D viewer of iMOD5 is still widely used by the community. 🙏 The user day was organised by the Geological Survey of Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburger Wasser. Many thanks to the organisers and our attendees for making first user day such a success and helping strengthen ties. We’re pleased to announce that the next user day will be a two-day event! 🌍 We are happy to announce that Deltares, together with Made Smart Group BV and 510 - The Netherlands Red Cross' data & digital team, will be deploying 3 pilot services to Destination Earth (DestinE) - the European Union’s ambitious initiative to create a highly accurate Digital Twin of Earth. 🔹 Global forecasts of storm surge, tide, and currents (core service) 🔹 Forecasting compound flood impacts in the Philippines 🔹 Optimising global shipping routes Our core service builds on Deltares’ Global Tide and Surge Model (GTSM) and Global Storm Surge Information System (GLOSSIS), integrated into the DestinE platform. The Philippines project builds on previous work where we, alongside KNMI - Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, TECNALIA Research & Innovation, SURFACE LIBRE), and 510 - The Netherlands Red Cross' data & digital team, demonstrated how high-resolution global weather forecasts can help mitigate flooding in vulnerable areas. This effort contributes to one of the Deltares’ ambitions: making the world’s population safer from flooding. Kun Yan, Senior Researcher in Coastal Flood Forecasting at Deltares: “We are very excited to continue working with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts - ECMWF and contribute to the ambitious Destination Earth program!” Thanks to: Kun Yan, Albrecht Weerts, Björn Backeberg, Frederiek Sperna Weiland, Tammo Zijlker, Floortje Roelvink, Tycho Bovenschen, @ Willem Tromp. #EnablingDeltaLife #DestinationEarth #FloodResilience #ClimateAction #SustainableFuture

🔎 Hoe beweegt zand langs onze kust?

It's estimated that between 60% and 70% of all soils in the EU are unhealthy due to erosion, compaction, sealing, pollution, loss of organic carbon, nutrients, water, and biodiversity. To put the importance of healthy soils on the map, the European Commission has launched the mission 'A Soil Deal for Europe' with the aim of establishing 100 Living Labs & Lighthouses by 2030. Deltares is committed to this EU mission in the project 'PREPSOIL', where we’re: 🌱 Working on determining what is needed for healthy, vital soils; 🔎 Setting up monitoring mechanisms; 💻 Being a central platform for co-creation and knowledge sharing. Linda Maring, Deltares-expert on soil and subsoil: “So many people are involved with soil health. People from different backgrounds care about soil and this is really promising. I think it’s really good to link to what people care about and this is something that we do strive for in PREPSOIL.” Want to play your part in restoring Europe’s soils?
