During a workshop on 30-31 January, together with Elisabetta Biasin, Delphine Dogot, Seda Gürses, Anastasia Karagianni, Andrea Leiter, Laurens Naudts, Marie Petersmann, Anastasia Siapka, Femke Snelting, Tanja Traxler and Lonneke van der Velden, we thought about, discussed, and critically examined #digitalsovereignty through a #feminist lens. Our collective writing exercise resulted in a blog post just published on Critical Legal Thinking!
Digital sovereignty is increasingly being claimed by and against different actors in diverse contexts. As a term, it’s often appealing due to its assertiveness of power, yet sovereignty’s historical origin also reflects colonialist and imperialist legacies. Aiming to dismantle unequal power, feminist ideals invite a critical questioning of the concept of digital sovereignty itself.
The blogpost first examines understandings of digital sovereignty, then motivates the feminist lens, and finally investigates what it would mean to reclaim or resist digital sovereignty through feminist visions and practices. It is available via the link below. We hope these observations can inform discussions on this complicated concept.
