Burger, fries, and acrylamide… your favourite foods could be dangerous for you! 🍔🍟 In the late ‘90s, a Eurofins company in Sweden (formerly known as AnalyCen AB) detected relatively high levels of acrylamide, a likely carcinogenic chemical, in local people. The researchers noticed that the levels of acrylamide varied depending on when the participants in the research study had last eaten, and began to question if food or beverage intake was linked to the presence of acrylamide. Together with their research partners at the University of Stockholm, the team in Sweden made a breakthrough discovery. They found out that acrylamide is formed when foods containing the amino acid asparagine are heated to high temperatures in the presence of certain sugars. Acrylamide is in the crunch of crackers and crisps, the crackle of breakfast cereals, the crispy edges of fries, and the toastiest part of your toast! The browner the food is after cooking, the higher the level of acrylamide likely to be present. Fistula is a debilitating childbirth-related injury which typically leads to chronic medical problems, depression, social isolation, and deepening poverty. ⚕️ Aniké is establishing a health post in a rural area of Guinea, making it possible to provide preventive and basic curative care, while facilitating safe childbirth. 👂 Ear Care Nepal is preventing avoidable hearing loss in school-aged children through early detection, timely intervention, and education around preventative measures. #Eurofins #EurofinsFoundation #Funding #GivingBack

Together with industry partners Actualia, IDM-UPV and ITENE, Eurofins IPROMA in Spain has been taking part in the AQUASERS project which aims to develop innovative biotechnological tools to detect emerging pathogens in water. 💧 What's the objective of the project? To create an autonomous device that can continuously monitor and optimise water quality, thereby minimising the risk of Legionnaires' disease (a type of pneumonia caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila) in high-risk water environments, for example, within water coolers, bathing areas, and water sanitation systems. Since the launch of the project in September 2023, Eurofins IPROMA's specialised knowledge has been fundamental to implementing advanced Legionella pneumophila detection techniques according to the UNE-EN ISO 11731 water quality standard. This expertise has already enabled Eurofins IPROMA to lead the development of innovative biosensors that can detect Legionella pneumophila in real time. Eurofins IPROMA has also been leading the biological analysis and characterisation of environmental matrices as part of the project, implementing digital dashboards for real-time management of water quality. These technological advances are helping to transform water quality control, offering automated solutions to reduce the risks associated with waterborne diseases. Eurofins announces the successful closing of the acquisition of SYNLAB’s clinical diagnostics operations in Spain and the transfer of operations to Eurofins, which took place on 31 March 2025.   SYNLAB’s clinical diagnostics operations in Spain comprise clinical diagnostics testing services, including genetics and anatomical pathology services provided throughout the country, which achieved revenues of EUR 140m in 2024.
