#DYK that bats play a vital role in our ecosystems? Today is International Bat Appreciation Day 2025! Bats are fascinating animals with unique abilities and significant contributions to the environment. • Pollination: Many bat species are essential pollinators, helping plants like bananas, avocados, and agave to thrive. • Pest Control: Bats consume vast amounts of insects, including mosquitoes, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. • Seed Dispersal: Bats aid in seed dispersal, promoting forest regeneration and biodiversity. • Scientific Research: Bats contribute to medical research, including studies on echolocation and disease resistance. Fun Facts About Bats • Echolocation: Bats navigate and hunt using echolocation, emitting sound waves and listening to the echoes. • Diversity: There are over 1,400 species of bats, making them one of the most diverse groups of mammals. • Longevity: Some bat species can live up to 30 years, much longer than most small mammals. Today, we celebrate the resilient and beautiful dandelion, a plant that is often pulled up and discarded as a weed. But…there is so much more to them than just a pretty colour! • Dandelions are packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, and K, as well as calcium, potassium, and iron • Every part of the dandelion is edible, from the roots to the flowers. They can be used in salads, teas, and even as a coffee substitute • Dandelions are important for pollinators like bees and butterflies, providing them with nectar early in the spring – and you know how much we love bees here 😉 Why not head outside today and pick some dandelions for a fresh salad! #NationalDandelionDay #DandelionLove #HealthyEating #PollinatorFriendly Image 📷 | 123RF

Today, we celebrate the humble carrot, a versatile and nutritious root vegetable! Whether you enjoy them raw, cooked, juiced, or even in desserts, carrots are a fantastic addition to any meal. Anyone else told that eating carrots can help you see in the dark?! Spoiler – they can’t! However…. • Carrots have been cultivated for over 5,000 years and were originally grown for their aromatic leaves and seeds rather than their roots • The orange carrots we commonly see today were developed in the Netherlands in the 17th century. Before that, carrots were typically purple, red, yellow, or white. The orange variety was cultivated to honour the Dutch Royal Family, the House of Orange. • The green tops of carrots are edible and can be used in salads, pesto, and other dishes. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. What a fascinating vegetable! #carrots #carrotappreciation
