At Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust, we build technologies and communities that enable persons with disabilities to thrive. That’s why we’re proud to be part of this bold initiative: AI for Disability Inclusion in Africa, in collaboration with The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), and Next Step Foundation. This is more than just a research project; it’s a chance to reimagine how inclusive, ethical AI can work for and with persons with disabilities across the continent. We’re especially excited that this work puts lived experiences at the center, engaging over 500 persons with disabilities and convening diverse voices from across the disability innovation ecosystem. We are excited to launch an innovative initiative on AI for Disability Inclusion in Africa. The Responsible Artificial Intelligence Lab (RAIL) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in partnership with Assistive Technologies for Disability Trust (AT4D) and the Next Step Foundation (NSF), is leading a six-month study to explore how AI can transform accessibility and inclusion for Persons with Disabilities in across Africa. This study will: - Map the current AI and disability innovation landscape - Engage over 500 Persons with Disabilities to understand needs and shape solutions - Convene key stakeholders—tech leaders, caregivers, DPOs—for inclusive dialogue - Deliver evidence-based insights to scale inclusive, ethical AI across the region “Africa must move from being a passive consumer of AI technologies to an active leader in their ethical development and deployment,” Dr. Christopher Harrisson, NSF's Executive Chairman. “By engaging Persons with Disabilities as co-researchers, we ensure that AI solutions are not merely designed for them but in collaboration with them," Prof. Jerry Kponyo, PI and Scientific Director at RAIL. “As we stand at the intersection of AI and disability, our goal is to ensure that the voices, needs, and aspirations of Persons with Disabilities in Africa are not only heard but actively shape the future," Bernard Chiira, CEO of AT4D. This research is a step toward lasting systems change. 📢 Just Launched: The Global Disability Inclusion Report Development without inclusion deepens inequalities. Persons with disabilities face higher mortality rates in disasters, live significantly shorter lives. Many countries spend less than 0.1% of their GDP on their inclusion. The Global Disability Inclusion Report: Accelerating Disability Inclusion in a Changing and Diverse World, developed for the Global Disability Summit 2025, examines these challenges and outlines concrete pathways for change. The report is the result of a collaborative effort of several UN agencies, the International Disability Alliance and the International Disability and Development Consortium and their members, and academia. It has been funded mostly by the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with co-funding from the London Stock Exchange Group and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The report highlights: - The impact of global trends like climate change, technology, and urbanization - Legal, policy, and financing measures to drive inclusion - Strategies for inclusive education and humanitarian action, healthcare, employment, and social protection Inclusive humanitarian action cannot wait.
