On March 25, 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the removal of import duties on several goods used in the manufacturing of electric vehicle batteries. The move aims to boost domestic production and enhance export competitiveness by lowering the cost of raw materials. While this policy could attract more players and stimulate local manufacturing, it has its critics. They highlight the need for complementary measures, such as significant investments in infrastructure, R&D, and skill development, to truly strengthen India’s EV sector. Without these efforts, there is concern that domestic manufacturers may remain reliant on imported components, limiting the growth of indigenous capabilities.
