About us
INECC is a national network of organisations and individuals, who connect on the issue of climate change from the perspective of marginalised communities. It was initiated in 1996 by a few development practitioners in India, who saw the link between the climate crisis and the larger issues of sustainable development and social justice. INECC works to bring climate change and sustainable development concerns of the marginalised majority and bring their voices into policy dialogues.

Effective volunteering is what the 2nd in the Climatica series of events from Climatora focused on. Held in association with INECC Pune Knowledge Cluster and Centre for Sustainable Development GIPE, the #NGO roundtable addressed and sought to identify key actionables around best ways to engage the student volunteers especially in the context of #NEP2020, which opens up the opportunity to have meaningful internships with not-for-profit organisations. A mix of academicians, NGOs, think tanks, student as well as citizen volunteers led to enlightened discussions about the ways to streamline the process for an impactful outcome through these efforts. From advance #research to #skill training to dedicated #volunteering cells within higher educational institutes and stuctured #internship programmes, the pathways to a result oriented process were the mainstays of the roundtable discussion. 🕊️ In Loving Memory: A Legacy of Love and Social Justice 🕊️ With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Dr. Nafisa Goga D'Souza (September 11, 1950 – 13 January 2025), a visionary leader, beloved mentor, and tireless advocate for social justice and climate justice. Her departure, following the recent loss of her cherished husband Dominic D'Souza (passed January 2, 2025), marks the end of an extraordinary partnership that transformed countless lives through their shared dedication to social work, climate action, and environmental justice. Nafisa's remarkable journey began at the University of Bombay, where she earned her Bachelor's in Economics and Political Science (1972) and Master's in Social Work (1974). Her pursuit of knowledge culminated in a Ph.D. in Social Work from Andhra University (2001), but it was her heart for service that truly defined her legacy. As the founding Executive Director of LAYA Resource Centre since 1989, Nafisa worked tirelessly to empower indigenous communities and promote sustainable development. Her vision of social justice was inseparable from environmental stewardship, leading her to co-found the Indian Network on Ethics and Climate Change (INECC). Her work touched lives from tribal villages in Andhra Pradesh to international climate conferences, always advocating for those whose voices often went unheard. The love story of Nafisa and Dominic D'Souza was one of shared purpose and profound dedication to social justice. Together, they founded LAYA, meaning "rhythm," embodying their belief in the harmonious relationship between communities and nature. Their partnership extended beyond marriage – it was a powerful alliance in the fight for environmental justice, lifelong learning, indigenous rights, and sustainable development. Dominic's passing on January 2nd, 2025, left a void in both the social justice community and Nafisa's heart. Their reunion, just days apart, speaks to the depth of their connection and shared life mission. Together, they leave behind an extraordinary legacy of compassion, activism, and unwavering commitment to social transformation. They are survived by their two children, Siddharth and Karuna, who witnessed their parents' dedication to creating a more equitable and sustainable world. The D'Souza family's impact on social and environmental justice will continue to inspire future generations through the countless lives they touched and the institutions they built. Nafisa and Dominic's work through LAYA and INECC stands as a testament to their belief that positive change begins at the grassroots level. Their vision of development that honors both human dignity and environmental sustainability continues to guide organizations and activists worldwide. May their both rest in power, and may their legacy of love and service continue to inspire us all.
