PLANNING and INFRASTRUCTURE were the overarching themes of this week’s industry news; despite positive soundings, it was a rough week of outcomes for energy and infrastructure, particularly across the renewables sector. Planning took centre stage as the Irish Planning Institute, marking its 50th year, held its annual conference in Salthill Galway. And the gloves were off… The line-up was superb, tough questions raised, prevailing narratives challenged, and the role of the planner deeply explored across a morning session that I hope is made public. But the highlight for me was when President of the Irish Planning Institute, Gavin Lawlor, called out the disingenuousness of the profession being made “whipping boy and scapegoat” for Ireland’s housing crisis, and called for the profession to stand up for itself. It was a powerful rallying cry and one that was, arguably, long overdue. I was personally delighted to present research on statutory public consultation and non-statutory community engagement, with a focus on attitudes of the public sector towards emerging tech tools - key insights below, email carol@caroltallon.com for more thorough findings. In a deeply concerning news story this week, it emerged that young people are ‘ditching home-ownership dream and applying for social housing instead’, details within. This comes the same week the Business Post published its ‘Property 100: The most influential people shaping Ireland’s property sector’, listing Ireland’s leading property visionaries, strategists and investors (read more from Property Editor Tina-Marie O'Neill 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eXzqGDs6). While I was genuinely proud to make the list alongside people I have supported, admired, and challenged over the past few decades, this recognition comes with a weight of responsibility - what are we doing to impact delivery on the ground? ❓ What more might we be doing to feed project insights back to policy-makers for a more industry-informed approach to policy-making? ❓ It is so clear to me that when it comes to influence across the built environment, we have moved beyond ‘experts’ into the realm of ‘experience’ - what have you done? What did you learn? How can we use that learning? And finally, my favourite headline of the week ‘Triumph of the culchie accent’ - let the record show that iProperty Radio was ahead of the curve on this! This and more in your weekly Sunday property round-up https://lnkd.in/eF-8zh2R
