The European Child Guarantee four years on, is no longer an early stage initiative. Strengthening the rights of children and pushing back on child poverty is an imperative. Great strides forward...but much still to be done.
Excellent end of a long week - we are meeting the EU Alliance for Investing in Children to reflect on EU Employment & Skills and Alliance’s views on the state of play with implementation of the European Child Guarantee, and more broadly, combatting child poverty and fostering rights of children. ✅24 March 2025 marked four years since the European Commission put forward a proposal for Council recommendation establishing European Child Guarantee. Four years is a long time and we cannot claim anymore that the initiative is at an early stage. ✅Fortunately, progress on the ground can be indeed seen. The increased provision of free school meals which we discussed with Child Guarantee Coordinators last December is just one example. ✅Availability of early childhood education and care is also increasing, both for the general population and for children in need. While there is still long way to go, we can already be proud of what has been already achieved. ✅The European Parliament political support for the European Child Guarantee continues under the new mandate: the parliamentary EMPL committee has recently decided to reestablish the working group on child guarantee. Looking forward for reflections and ideas for strengthening the Child Guarantee!
