🔎 Rethinking the mechanics of TPMS lattices! Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (#TPMS) structures are gaining traction for their unique mechanical properties, but how well do traditional classification systems apply to them? This week, we highlight new research that challenges existing assumptions about TPMS rigidity and mechanical behaviour. 👩🔬 The recent publication, "On the rigidity and mechanical behaviour of triply periodic minimal surfaces-based lattices: insights from extensive experiments and simulations", is the work of IMDEA Materials researchers Lucía Doyle and Carlos González, alongside Humberto Terrones (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute), a former IMDEA Materials Visiting Researcher. Their study analyses 36 distinct TPMS lattice architectures, evaluating their elastic and plastic behaviour through both experiments and simulations. The research critically examines the validity of Gibson-Ashby scaling laws and the stretching-bending paradigm in TPMS structures - highlighting their limitations for non-slender beam architectures. 💡 One of the key findings reveals that TPMS rigidity is governed by the alignment of surface members with load directions and the presence of solid regions that prevent rotation. The study was published in Advanced Engineering Materials (Wiley). Find out more at the link ⬇️

👩🔬 👨🔬 IMDEA Materials Institute researchers, Dr. Christina Schenk and Dr. Maciej Haranczyk, have introduced a novel method for efficiently exploring material and chemical composition spaces, addressing the challenges of mixture and synthesis constraints in design. The paper, “A novel constrained sampling method for efficient exploration in materials and chemical mixture design”, presents the 'ConstrAined Sequential laTin hypeRcube sampling methOd' (#CASTRO), an open-source tool designed for the efficient exploration of multicomponent systems. Optimised for uniform sampling in constrained small- to moderate-dimensional spaces, CASTRO employs a scalable divide-and-conquer strategy to handle mixture constraints and enhance sampling efficiency with prior data. With potential adaptations for higher-dimensional applications, it is well-suited for material design, chemistry, and pharmaceuticals. Case studies validate its scalability and effectiveness in exploring constrained design spaces. The software and case studies are available on GitHub (https://lnkd.in/dijj-sU9). 🔗 The research was also supported by fellow IMDEA Materials researchers Jose Hobson and De-Yi Wang, who contributed to the study's data collection. You can find the original publication in Computational Materials Science at the link below. This work is part of the #DIGIBIOFAM (TED2021-131409B-100 project), funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and the European Union NextGenerationEU/PRTR. The dreamteam in action 🍿 Last week, Alex Mainguy and Kiarash Mashoufi stayed at IMDEA Materials Institute after the consortium meeting. The goal of this visit was to conduct extensive characterization on the extruded Mg tubes that will serve as preforms for medical devices within the BIOMEND project. They have received training on techniques such as EBSD to analyze the grain size and orientation of their extruded samples and to compare them with the pre-extrusion materials. Our gratitude goes to Nafiseh Mollaei and 杨标标 Biaobiao Yang for their unwavering support throughout this week. These learnings will be used to optimize the processing methods used to manufacture Mg-based tubes for the BIOMEND project.
