⚛️ IGFAE researchers Yassid Ayyad and Alicia Muñoz Ramos are involved in a study that has discovered a unique resonance in beryllium-10, a radioactive isotope of this element. 🔎 The paper, published in 'Physical Review Letters' , describes a resonance at 7.27 MeV (megaelectronvolts), just below the energy threshold at which alpha particles could be released. This suggests that beryllium-10 excited at this energy has a strong alpha-cluster structure, behaving like two alpha particles and two neutrons bound together. 💥 The experiment was carried out at the ReA6 accelerator, located at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (USA). 📊 Yassid Ayyad performed the data analysis using a framework developed by IGFAE staff, including Alicia Muñoz. The tools used in this study will be important for future research on rare and exotic atomic nuclei, for clustering in nuclei. 📰 More info here ⬇️

The Galician Institute of High Energy Physics (Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías, IGFAE) is a joint research center of University of Santiago de Compostela and Xunta de Galicia (the Galician Autonomous Government), that it was officially created on July 2, 1999. Our main goal is to coordinate and foster the scientific and technical research in the field of High Energy Physics, Particle and Nuclear Physics and related areas as Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Instrumentation, etc. Of primary importance is the planning and promotion of the relation with large experimental facilities, especially with CERN, GSI/FAIR, Pierre Auger Observatory and LIGO at present. In 2016, the institute received a María de Maeztu award as Research Unit of Excellence. This has been a significant opportunity to boost the scientific performance of the Institute in the quest of some of the most fundamental questions in Physics. IGFAE integrates the Spanish ‘Severo Ochoa’ Centres and ‘María de Maeztu’ Units of Excellence, SOMMa. In 2024, the IGFAE renewed its accreditation as Unit of Excellence. Since 2019, the institute has also been part of the Xunta de Galicia's CIGUS network of centres of excellence, which accredits the quality and impact of its research #RedeCIGUS #FondosEuropeos

Meet Georgina Xifra Goya, a second-year PhD student at Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías (IGFAE) , Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (USC), who embarked on an exciting research stay at FAIR-GSI as part of #followthelead! ‼🇪🇸✈️🇩🇪 She began her PhD at GSI in November 2023 through the GET_INvolved Programme, contributing to the S091 experiment at R3B. This hands-on experience in a cutting-edge research environment marked her first experimental campaign. 🏢 Her project focused on the installation and calibration of the CALIFA scintillators, including a new set of crystals at low polar angles called CEPA-CsI. These crystals improved the angular coverage, aiding in the tracking of high-energy, forward-focused particles. What happened next? 🤩 Inspired by this experience, she returned to develop two advanced detectors—a TPC and a fiber detector—for the S073 experiment at R3B in the NUSTAR Collaboration. "Being immersed in this high-impact research environment has been a game changer. I’ve deepened my knowledge of nuclear physics and contributed to groundbreaking research." 🎖️ Anxo Farina Biasi, awarded as ‘Junior Leader’ Postdoctoral Fellowship from Fundación ”la Caixa”. He took part this Tuesday in Barcelona in the official ceremony of the 2024 call. Anxo will develop his career in the IGFAE over the next few years, thanks to this grant. His proposal was the only one selected in Galicia in this edition. 〰️ He will continue with his research, which ‘seeks to develop a theory that allows us to better understand wave phenomena, energy transport processes that occur everywhere: in sound, light, sea waves, earthquakes and even in extreme events such as the collision of black holes’. Thus, ‘understanding their behaviour is crucial not only for predicting natural phenomena such as tsunamis, but also for improving communication technologies, such as mobile telephony, and advancing medical techniques, such as ultrasound imaging. My research aims to provide the theoretical basis for the development of these practical applications', Anxo explains. 🚀 In recent years, thanks to the Junior Leader programme, the IGFAE incorporated several researchers who were later able to consolidate their scientific careers thanks to programmes such as the Ramón y Cajal. This is the case of Riccardo Borsato, Juan Calderón Bustillo Ph.D and Aarón Alejo Alonso, who are currently leading their respective lines of work at the centre. Since the creation of the programme, the IGFAE has reached four of the seven grants that have come to Galicia.
