At the CIM, we reaffirm our position as a leading centre in Galician and European marine science. We welcomed a visit from the Xunta de Galicia at our #ECIMAT headquarters and the CIM UVigo oceanographic vessel, Spain's first hybrid commercial vessel. 👉 The visit highlighted the institutional collaboration between Universidade de Vigo and the #Xunta, one of the main funders of our centre, recognised as a centre of excellence within the #RedeCIGUS. During the meeting, we shared our capabilities and strategic areas: • Biotechnology and sustainable aquaculture • Marine digitalisation and open data • Climate change adaptation and nature-based solutions • Conservation, environmental modelling, and support for marine renewable energies The Centro de Investigación Mariña (CIM-UVigo) aims to consolidate itself as a key node for marine research in Galicia, with a model based on interdisciplinarity, transfer to the productive sector, and international projection. #BeyondTheSea A new study involving #CIM researcher #JoseBDíez reconstructs the Cretaceous ecosystem in Teruel. 🦕 In collaboration with researchers from Fundación Dinópolis, the study, published in #Diversity, reveals new palaeobotanical data on the habitat of dinosaurs 125 million years ago. The research analyses fossil leaf remains found at five sites in Teruel, identifying the presence of the plant #Desmiophyllum and providing a broader insight into palaeoecosystems and the environmental conditions of the Cretaceous, complementing the fossil record of dinosaurs. 📣 The #SALMAR project is making progress in studying the climate impact on intertidal ecosystems and aquaculture. At #CIM, postdoctoral research is paving the way for a sustainable management of the marine environment. 📡 Led by Marisela Des and #DiegoFernández, the project refines the bathymetry of the Ría de Arousa to enhance numerical models and develop an early warning system for extreme climate events. 🌡️⛈️ ✅ #SALMAR is part of the new #CIM_PosDou2025 initiative, which supports innovative projects led by postdoctoral researchers, strengthening the commitment to scientific excellence and knowledge transfer. The #CIM and Campus do Mar are strengthening their internationalisation strategy with a visit from the Minister of the Sea of Cape Verde, Jorge Santos, to explore the #ECIMAT facilities. During the meeting, opportunities for cooperation in marine research and training were discussed, reinforcing ties between both Atlantic regions. 📣 CIM researchers visit Technische Universität Braunschweig in Germany to deliver training on 👉 #DualSPHysics, a pioneering modelling tool for tackling challenges in coastal engineering and renewable energy. This model has been developed under CIM’s leadership in collaboration with international laboratories over the past two decades. It is specifically designed to address extreme situations where conventional models fail to provide valid solutions. The #LeichtweissInstitute at the #TechnicalUniversityofBraunschweig, a leading laboratory in coastal structures research, is keen to apply this model to tackle complex scenarios that traditional methods cannot solve. Throughout the week, discussions will also explore new opportunities for European-level collaboration. Inspiring the next generation of scientists! 🌊🔬    Today, Elena Ojea visited IES Castelao in Vigo, where she shared her journey as a scientist and her work leading Future Oceans Lab at the Centro de Investigación Mariña (CIM-UVigo) of the Universidade de Vigo. Speaking to students preparing for university, she discussed what it means to be a researcher, the challenges and rewards of a scientific career, and the importance of ocean sustainability.    🔎 The goal? To inspire and encourage young minds to pursue science, showing them that research is not only about discovering new knowledge but also about making an impact on our planet’s future. 🌍    A huge thanks to IES Castelao for the invitation and to the students for their curiosity and engagement! 🎥 Meet Nerea Cazás Fraga, winner of the special mention at the III Marie Tharp Awards! 🏆 👩🔬 The CIM researcher studies the evolution of vegetation in the Vigo estuary from the last glacial maximum to the present day. 20,000 years ago, the sea level was 120 metres below the current level, and it was possible to walk to the Cíes Islands. Through her research, Nerea examines the transition from that primordial landscape to the present Holocene. To do this, she conducts boat campaigns to extract sediment cores from the seabed. Inch by inch, she identifies plant micro and macrofossils under the microscope to reconstruct paleoenvironments and understand how species have evolved. 📌 The goal? To apply this knowledge to predict how climate change may affect the biodiversity and ecosystems of our estuary in the future. 📣 CIM promotes national collaboration for the sustainability of European research infrastructures. As part of the EMBRedES+ project, we organised a key meeting in Madrid ➡️ bringing together nearly 60 national representatives from research infrastructures that carry out their activity across several European countries. During the event, we addressed major challenges for the future of society in areas such as health, climate change, new imaging and omics technologies, and #DataFAIRification, which aims to improve the management and standardisation of scientific data. Coordinated by CIM, the #EMBRedES+ project seeks to consolidate and strengthen @embrc_spain, the Spanish node of EMBRC - European Marine Biological Resource Centre.
