The primary mission of the Academy is to assist in building a knowledge-based Estonia, fostering adaptation of new knowledge for economic growth and improvement of the quality of life in Estonia, enhancing public appreciation of science and scientific methods of thought.

  • Last week, members of the Estonian Academy of Sciences, 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐫𝐢 𝐌ä𝐥𝐤𝐬𝐨𝐨 and 𝐓𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐞, participated in a joint international conference of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg and the Baltic Academies of Sciences, "Current and Future Security Architecture for the Baltic States and Europe“. Lauri Mälksoo's presentation focused on the Baltic experiences and views on Russia and international law. Tarmo Soomere introduced the keynote speech by 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝, Member of the European Parliament for Estonia, titled " Security architecture for the Baltic States and Europe: A view from Tallinn and Brussels".   • 🏅 We are happy that three members of the Estonian Academy of Sciences have been chosen to receive state decorations from Estonian President Alar Karis!   • ✨ Today, the inauguration ceremony of Mart Saarma as the President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences was held. The insignia of office were presented by the President of the Republic of Estonia, Alar Karis. In his inaugural speech, Mart Saarma addressed the challenges facing the Academy. He emphasized that the Academy's core responsibilities include promoting science, spreading scientific thought, and introducing and explaining scientific achievements and new technologies to the public. In the near future, the key areas of science and innovation will include new medicines and medical technologies, green technologies, artificial intelligence, new agriculture and new foods, new materials and new energy sources.   • At the General Assembly of the Estonian Academy of Sciences held on December 4, new Vice Presidents, Secretary General and the Non-Executive Members of the Board were elected from among the Members of Academy. 👉 Academy Members 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐤 𝐓𝐚𝐦𝐦 and 𝐉𝐚𝐚𝐤 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐨 were elected as Vice Presidents, 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐊𝐚𝐡𝐫𝐮 as Secretary General. Academy Members 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐫, 𝐉𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐤 𝐊𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐤𝐢, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐚𝐧, 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐭𝐢 𝐑𝐚𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐥 and 𝐀𝐧𝐮 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐨 will take up their posts as Non-Executive Members of the Board. Their nominations were presented to the General Assembly by 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚, the new President of Academy . 👉 In October and November, the academy's divisions elected new heads who are also automatically Members of the Board. The new Head of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences is 𝐓𝐢𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚-𝐋𝐢𝐢𝐯. 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐨 𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐦 was re-elected for a second term as Head of the Division of Astronomy and Physics. 𝐌𝐚𝐚𝐫𝐣𝐚 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐠-𝐊𝐮𝐮𝐬𝐤 has been appointed Head of the Division of Informatics and Engineering and 𝐊𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐊𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐦ä𝐞 Head of the Division of Biology, Geology and Chemistry. This means that the next Academy Board will have 13 members instead of the current 12, with five-year mandate. 🗓️ Mart Saarma's term as President of the Academy as well as the terms of Vice Presidents and Non-Executive Members of the Board started on December 8. The term of the new Secretary General will start on 1 February next year. The terms of the Heads of Divisions started right after their election. 📸 Members of the new Board present at the General Assembly.
